Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Education plays a vital role in students' life. Some people believe that university students should learn other subjects in addition to the main subjects, while some people believe that it is significant to devote all the time to a specific subject or a qualification. This essay will discuss both views before giving my opinion.
On the one hand, learning additional subject with main subjects have numerous benefits. First and foremost, one reason is students expose to different kinds of environment in different sectors by mastering additional subjects. Moreover, students can gain experience from various sectors, that would be helpful at the time of work placement. As a result, students who tries to acquire new subjects will have better work opportunities, as they can decide, in which sector they are going to work. For instance, a core engineering student who learn additional subjects such as Python, Java and SQL can have a chance to place in core companies or software companies. Another important advantage is that they can develop practical skills by mastering additional subjects. These practical skills would be useful to solve a real-world problem. By gaining knowledge from different areas student are able to improve critical thinking as well. Hence, learning other subjects would be more beneficial.
On the other hand, devoting all the time to learn a particular subject for a specific qualification are having limited advantages. However, one of the major advantages is that by allotting more time to a specific course will result in deeper research and understanding about that subject. Furthermore, this allows the students to think more deeper and also, they can lead to new innovation or new techniques for any specific issue. For instance, a student who studied web development created a useful website for elderly people, that gives an alert to take medicines at regular intervals. On top of that, students can gain better academic scores as they solely focus on one main subject. Better grades lead to better performance. Hence, giving all the time and attention to learn about a particular qualification gives better academic grades, deeper research which leads to innovation.
In conclusion, although spending more amount of time on learning other subjects result in deeper research, which promotes innovation and better grades. I strongly believe that mastering additional subjects will help the students to gain more practical skills, exposure to different sectors, and better employment opportunities.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, particularly the examples regarding engineering and web development. However, the conclusion contains a slight logical inconsistency: it summarizes the benefits of the 'specialization' view as if they were the primary focus of the essay, despite the author's stated preference for the 'breadth' approach. To reach a higher band, ensure that the conclusion consistently reflects the arguments made in the body paragraphs and maintains a clear, unified stance throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph has a central topic, and the progression of ideas is generally smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, there are some minor issues with referencing and flow, such as the slightly awkward transition in the final paragraph where the summary of the opposing view is conflated with the author's own position. Overall, the structure is clear and supports the development of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing for the expression of ideas with reasonable precision. There is an attempt to use topic-specific terminology like 'work placement', 'core engineering', and 'innovation'. However, there are some repetitive word choices and minor collocation errors, such as 'learning additional subject' (should be plural 'subjects') and 'think more deeper' (should be 'think more deeply'). While the range is sufficient to convey meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and flexibility required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that prevent a higher score. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('learning additional subject... have', 'students who tries'), incorrect verb forms ('a core engineering student who learn'), and awkward phrasing ('are having limited advantages'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the control over complex structures is inconsistent. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of comparative adverbs.
