IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

There are some students who want to gain knowledge about other subjects while studying their main subjects. On the other hand, some individuals think that we should give all of our time and attention to complete our qualification. I will discuss both of these views in this essay and give my opinion on these statements.

Nowadays, most of the students think that they should learn more and more subjects rather than giving full attention to their main subjects. They believe that they will become more efficient to grow in their professional life after getting information of more subjects. To some extent, it helps us because we get more opportunities and fields to work in but in most scenarios it is just a waste of time. For example, some students think they can earn more money because they have more skills but they cannot master all of the subjects and get puzzled while studying additional courses.

On the second hand, some students have a point of view that it is more necessary to give all of our time and focus to study main subjects and get qualified. We cannot pay attention to our main subjects and additional subjects at a same time. Furthermore, we should only master the subjects that are related to our field. For example, a student who is studying subjects related to computer technology and biotechnology together will often get distracted and cannot conquers any of these skills.

In conclusion, I have discussed both views and gave my opinion that we should only select those additional subjects which are related to our field. Otherwise, we will get depressed and confused that whom to give more attention.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument against studying multiple subjects relies on a narrow example of 'computer technology and biotechnology', which is a specific combination that might not represent all interdisciplinary studies. The essay would benefit from more nuanced exploration of why students might choose to broaden their knowledge, such as the benefits of a multidisciplinary approach in the modern job market. The conclusion is present but brief, and the overall position could be more thoroughly supported with deeper analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, each with a central topic. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the other hand', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion', which help the flow of the text. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly unnatural, such as 'On the second hand', which is not standard English. The progression of ideas is generally logical, but the connection between sentences could be smoother to improve the overall readability. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some phrasing, like 'whom to give more attention', is slightly awkward.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. There is some repetition of basic terms like 'subjects', 'students', and 'attention'. While the student attempts to use some academic vocabulary, such as 'efficient', 'qualification', and 'distracted', there are instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'conquers any of these skills' (should be 'master') and 'puzzled' (perhaps 'overwhelmed' would be more appropriate). The range is sufficient to communicate the main points, but it does not demonstrate the flexibility or sophistication required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'at a same time' (should be 'at the same time'), 'gave my opinion' (should be 'have given'), and 'that whom to give more attention' (which is syntactically incorrect). These errors do not impede communication, but they indicate a lack of control over more complex structures. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement, article usage, and more accurate sentence construction.
