IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Some university learners prefer to study multiple disciplines in spite of focusing on their mainstream. On the flip side, it is better to focus on their major subjects. Although studying diverse topics can help individuals to grasp wide concepts and to attend different trainings, I believe in the latter opinion, as focusing on mono-learning develops a high concentration level and improves academic performance.

Students who study different subjects along with their main course can get information about broad topics. Graduates in universities and other research centres pursue both major and minor subjects in order to fulfill the academic criteria. As a result, they can learn new terms through theory and practical classes, which develop their interdisciplinary skills. In addition, they can also get opportunities to attend training and workshops held at the inter-university level. Since the basics of other subjects become clear, they can perform better in competitions such as quizzes and in seminars. However, learning multiple subjects can sometimes lower academic performance.

By contrast, studying the major coursework with more concentration is crucial to qualify for the exams. Reading subjects mainly from the main fields not only aids in building deep focus but also enhances academic performance. As a consequence, the chances of being anxious and taking the burden of workload can be minimised. Moreover, students can understand their field deeply so that they can prepare well for any competitive exams. For instance, a medical student who concentrates primarily on subjects such as anatomy, physiology, and pharmacology is likely to have more time to master these demanding areas than someone who divides their attention among several unrelated disciplines.

In conclusion, although studying additional subjects can broaden students' knowledge and help them develop interdisciplinary skills, I believe that giving more attention to one's major is more beneficial. This approach allows students to concentrate on their core subjects and reduce academic pressure.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is consistent throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the comparison between a medical student and a generalist. However, the development of the first viewpoint (studying multiple subjects) is slightly less detailed than the second. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific, real-world examples of how interdisciplinary study benefits a student's future career path, rather than focusing primarily on quizzes and seminars. Overall, the task is well-covered with a logical structure.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'On the flip side', 'In addition', 'By contrast', and 'As a consequence' are used effectively to link ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. The referencing is generally clear, though some transitions could be slightly more sophisticated to improve the flow between sentences. Overall, the structure is coherent and supports the argument well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'interdisciplinary skills', 'mainstream', 'mono-learning', and 'demanding areas' show an awareness of academic style. There are occasional minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'grasp wide concepts' (better: 'grasp broad concepts') and 'taking the burden of workload' (better: 'bearing the burden of a heavy workload'). However, these do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more idiomatic or less common collocations to demonstrate a wider range of lexical flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There is good control over grammar, and the majority of sentences are error-free. You successfully use complex structures like 'Although studying diverse topics can help... I believe...' and 'For instance, a medical student who concentrates... is likely to...'. There are very few grammatical errors, and punctuation is generally accurate. The writing is clear and easy to read, showing a good level of control over sentence construction. A few more varied complex structures could push this score higher.
