Student answer (Band 6.0)

People have different views about including an additional course to their initial discipline. While some student desired to include an extra courses other argue that focusing on the main subject is better. Although both perspective have some merits, I personally agree with the people who decide to give their all to the courses related to their discipline. This essay will discuss both views and give my opinion.

On the one hand, the reason why some students feel this way is because of higher rate of unemployment. This is because most jobs that are associated with someone's profession are difficult to secure these days, so they believe if they acquire experience from other fields they might be lucky to obtain a job in that field. Furthermore, people's personal interest also determine how students desire to engage in a subject different from their course. This means some students are offered admission on a course they don't like in order to feel fulfilled they engage in other subjects that they like. For instance, a lady who desire to study anatomy was given biochemistry, she may decided to borrow anatomy as a course.

On the other hand, the main reason I agree with focusing on a particular field of study is because it enhances full attention and choice of discipline. firstly, when students focus on subject that are related their discipline they tend to excel academically compared to divided attention. For example, a lady in nursing department will have time to study harder in order to be a registered nurse. Secondly, some student have a deep passion for the course they are studying, so they set of people may not request for additional subject.

In conclusion, although learning another subject that differ from one's field of study have some merit in employment world, focusing on a particular course is much greater because it promote full attention and enhance easy achievement.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The essay addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both perspectives and providing a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding unemployment is a bit speculative and could be better supported with more concrete reasoning. The example of the anatomy student is relevant but could be explained with more depth to fully illustrate the point. While the position is consistent, the supporting arguments in the second body paragraph are slightly repetitive, focusing on 'attention' and 'passion' without fully exploring the academic benefits of specialization. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully extended with clear, logical explanations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'Furthermore,' and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the general statement about unemployment and the specific example of the anatomy student feels a bit abrupt. Additionally, some referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'so they set of people,' which hinders the overall flow. Improving the variety and naturalness of linking words would enhance the coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'discipline,' 'qualification,' and 'academically.' However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and minor errors, such as 'additional course to their initial discipline' instead of 'in addition to,' and 'borrow anatomy as a course.' The range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on basic phrasing. To improve, the student should focus on using more precise collocations and a wider range of academic vocabulary to convey their points with greater sophistication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('some student desired,' 'some student have'), missing articles ('in employment world'), and awkward phrasing ('a lady who desire to study'). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence construction often lacks the control required for higher bands. The errors do not significantly impede communication, but they are frequent enough to be noticeable. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage would significantly improve the accuracy of the writing.
