IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some of the undergrads want to study other subjects along with there main subjects, while others think that staying focused on the offered subjects is better. Through this essay we will discuss both views and I will give my opinion as well.

Including other domain knowledge into university's syllabus is better for students generalisation across many domains and fields. Through this initiative, educational institutes will successfully instill other skills such as leadership, communication, professionalism and many others into their pupils. This can also help students to get better opportunities in their lives. For instance, all the prestigious global scholarships and internships are not mainly focused on specialised domain knowledge, in fact they value other skills and knowledge. Same things go for a CEO selection, It not mainly based on having domain knowledge and having research papers in a specific domain, but the exposure and information they have, related to other fields.

On the other hand, many people believe that it important to be dedicated to only the course work, this idea is a better approach to produce professional with specialised role in a domain. It tend a learning individual to master his skills in a one domain. For example, recently due to emerging AI technology, industry is now offering more specialised jobs, like in field of AI you can see many jobs such as AI engineer, AI developer, AI expert, Machine learning expert e.t.c, all of these jobs are same but become different at some aspects. But I strongly contend with the idea that undergrads should learn other subjects as well because people with generalised knowledge are more likely to excel and they have ability to become better professionals.

In conclusion, along with university offered subjects students wanted to learn other subjects, while others think the opposite, their point of view is that learning pupils should be focused on their fields related knowledge. I strongly agree that student should study other domains, this help them to have more generalised knowledge and this will incur other skills in them.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of global internships and the specialization required in AI fields. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument regarding CEO selection is a bit vague and could have been better linked to the necessity of a multidisciplinary background. The position is consistent throughout, but the supporting examples could be more detailed to reach a higher band. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, but the depth of analysis is limited.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the other hand' and 'In conclusion', though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, although the flow between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the structure supports the reader in following the argument, meeting the requirements for a band 6.5 to 7.0 range.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'domain knowledge', 'specialised', and 'generalisation'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'instill other skills' (rather than 'develop' or 'foster') and 'incur other skills'. The range is sufficient for the task, but the lack of more sophisticated or precise lexical items prevents a higher score. Spelling is generally accurate, though 'there' is used incorrectly instead of 'their' in the first sentence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the fluency of the text. Examples include 'It tend a learning individual' (subject-verb agreement error), 'It not mainly based on' (missing auxiliary verb), and 'industry is now offering' (missing article). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with comma splices. While the errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to limit the score to a 6.0, as the majority of sentences are not error-free.
