Student answer (Band 5.0)

In today's rapidly evolving world, while some tertiary students give importance on learning supplementary topics as well as their academic studies, others argue that, students must be study hard and give efforts for academic qualification.

On the one hand, additional topics broaden our knowledge and fosters our intellectual horizons by providing more details, discussions, idea and so on. For example, a computer science graduate student may learn about web development, programming, coding as their course offer these opportunities. But if anyone have great enthusiasm on field like cybersecurity, artificial intelligence or robotics and they developed their skill at the same time with their main topics, they will be ahead of others. Additionally, learning more make students more experienced as they have broaden knowledge about the topic.

On the other hand, most of the learners studying hard just because of academic achievement. They give more importance in their qualification rather than learning new things. Our academic system is responsible for that, as it provide more academic pressure on students to achieve higher score and give punishment if they don't. Therefore, our parents give more attention on our good performances, they never judge student by their knowledge. However, some students also want to study for their degree because it gives them the motivation to work harder and smarter.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both views and provides an opinion, but the development is significantly hindered by the incomplete conclusion and the failure to meet the minimum word count requirement. The ideas presented, such as the benefits of supplementary learning versus the pressure of academic qualifications, are relevant but remain under-developed. Because the essay is unfinished and falls short of the 250-word threshold, the task is only partially addressed. To improve, you must ensure all parts of the prompt are fully explored and that the essay reaches the required length to allow for a comprehensive conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay uses basic paragraphing and some cohesive devices like 'On the one hand' and 'Additionally'. However, the progression of ideas is sometimes disjointed. The transition between the two viewpoints is clear, but the lack of a completed conclusion disrupts the overall coherence of the argument. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect complex ideas more fluidly. The abrupt ending makes the final structure feel incomplete.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. You rely on simple phrasing such as 'give importance' and 'studying hard'. There are also some errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'fosters our intellectual horizons' (horizons are usually 'broadened') and 'give efforts'. While the meaning is generally clear, the lack of more sophisticated or academic vocabulary limits the score. Expanding your range to include more precise academic collocations would significantly enhance your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('students must be study hard', 'if anyone have'), missing articles, and incorrect verb forms ('it provide', 'they developed their skill'). Punctuation is also inconsistent. While you attempt complex sentences, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage will help improve your accuracy.
