IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In contemporary society, learning main subjects with other subjects have emerged as a highly debated issue. While a segment of people claim that it has led to a higher impact on society, others strongly oppose this notion. This essay will look at both sides of the argument and draw a conclusion.

To commence with, some people claim that undergraduates want to study a minor course along with major courses. As pupils want to boost their knowledge so that it will be valuable for them in their upcoming future. They think this will help them in their job prospects, as they will have enough experience about other subjects, and it will escalate their intelligence skills. For instance, in organizations, managers often ask about other field subjects in order to check their understanding level, as in case of any difficult projects, candidates can easily tackle it by applying other side subjects rather than their major courses. Hence, students think both subjects should be treated equally in the universities.

On the flip side, some people claim that major dedication and time should be given to their core subject because it is the base of shaping their future. The teachers should teach them in a very detailed way, so that learners should have a good understanding of it rather than others' subjects. Good command on their major field is very valuable for gaining employment. For instance, in a computer field, pupils should know each technique of programming languages and how to use code syntax so that their programs can run smoothly without generating errors. Therefore, it should be paramount for every tertiary learner to learn it in a sustainable manner.

Furthermore, from my perspective, I believe that major outline should be the first priority for every institute, as it will lead to secure more jobs easily. To cite an example, in software company, only programming-related questions are being asked for hiring their staffs because organizations do not have any concerns whether people know other courses or not. Key subject is the first preference for everyone.

To sum up, although minor course broadens people's horizons, but major subject will predominantly benefit for every student. As it will lead to flourish a student's life by providing a wide range of job opportunities and will have a deep understanding in clearing their concepts.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the benefits of interdisciplinary knowledge versus the necessity of deep specialization. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat repetitive. For instance, the argument for focusing on a major subject is repeated in both the third and fourth paragraphs without adding significant new depth. While the position is consistent, the supporting examples, such as the mention of 'programming languages', are a bit narrow. To reach a higher band, ensure that each paragraph introduces a distinct, well-elaborated point rather than restating the same core idea.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'To commence with', 'On the flip side', and 'Furthermore'. However, some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. Additionally, there are minor issues with referencing and flow, such as the sentence 'although minor course broadens people's horizons, but major subject will predominantly benefit', where the use of 'although' and 'but' in the same clause is redundant and creates a slight lack of fluency.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their meaning clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'contemporary society', 'predominantly', and 'sustainable manner'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'escalate their intelligence skills' (improve/enhance would be more natural) and 'major outline' (core curriculum/specialization would be more precise). The range is sufficient to discuss the topic, but more precise academic vocabulary would elevate the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors. Examples include 'learning main subjects with other subjects have emerged' (subject-verb agreement error), 'in case of any difficult projects' (awkward phrasing), and 'hiring their staffs' (staff is an uncountable noun). Punctuation is generally fine, but there are occasional slips. The control of complex structures is inconsistent, and while the errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score.
