Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some university students are inclined towards learning additional subjects along with their main subjects whereas, others are the advocate of the idea of staying focused to their course specefic subjects. In my opinion, it is crucial to dedicate formal college education to only career related courses and remaining subjects can be learnt in the free time.
Advanced programmes that are taught in universities require deep insight of the subjects that are being learnt. Many students prefer focusing only on their course focused subjects because they require a fair deal of attention. Moreover, concepts get really complex and learning them is extremely crucial for the better understanding of particular field. For instance, If a student will spend a chunk of his day in learning an irrelevant subject he will be distracted from his goal. Universities foster professional courses and does not have time to let its pupil dewell over less important subject. These courses require its learners to do research write theasis and perform certain experiments along with regular lectures and students are not left with ample time to study any other subject during their college hours.
On the other hand, many students believe if they will stay in touch with less relevant subject it will help them to have a better understanding of multiple domains of life. For instance, staying in touch with English will help them to develop better linguistic skills in their communication. Moreover, subjects like Arts can increase their ability to be creative in life. Some students are generally captivated to the idea of learning multiple domains as it is believed that having an extensive learning exposure flourishes one’s mental understanding a lot.
In conclusion, I believe it is mandatory for a university student to have career focused courses in the university seatings. However, multiple subjects do reinforce and strengthen one’s foundation but learning them in university is not the best approach. Therefore, if an individual is interested to learn a particular subject one must learn it in his leisure time without an expense of compromising his formal education.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is consistent throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the argument for focusing on core subjects is well-supported with examples like research and thesis writing, the counter-argument regarding the benefits of additional subjects is less developed and relies on somewhat vague assertions about 'multiple domains of life'. To reach a higher band, the student should provide more concrete, specific examples of how learning additional subjects might practically benefit a student's future career or personal development, rather than relying on general statements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'Therefore' are used to link ideas, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Referencing is generally clear, although there are minor issues with pronoun usage, such as 'its pupil' referring back to 'Universities' (plural), which creates a slight lack of agreement. Overall, the flow of information is easy to follow, and the progression of the argument is logical.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at more sophisticated language like 'inclined towards', 'captivated', and 'reinforce'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and minor errors, such as 'course specefic' (spelling), 'dewell' (spelling/usage), 'theasis' (spelling), and 'university seatings' (inappropriate collocation). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a lack of precision. To improve, the student should focus on accurate spelling and ensuring that collocations are natural in an academic context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('Universities... does not have time'), missing articles ('learning an irrelevant subject'), and punctuation errors (missing spaces after commas and periods). While the meaning remains clear, these frequent minor errors prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. The student should focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, particularly regarding pluralization and article usage, to ensure that complex sentences are constructed without error.
