Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both views regarding university students learning additional subjects versus focusing solely on their main qualification. However, the development of these ideas is limited and often unclear. The arguments are presented in a fragmented way, and the student's own opinion is not clearly stated or consistently supported throughout the essay. The connection between the examples provided (such as playing cricket or working to pay dues) and the core debate is tenuous. To improve, the student needs to provide more structured, logical arguments and ensure that the position is clearly articulated in the introduction and maintained throughout the body paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks a clear organizational structure. While there is an attempt to divide the text into paragraphs, the progression of ideas is disjointed. Cohesive devices are largely absent or misused, making it difficult to follow the logical flow of the argument. For example, the transition between the student's personal observations and the general discussion is abrupt. The use of referencing is often unclear, with pronouns like 'he' used without a clear antecedent. To achieve a higher score, the student should focus on using linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'however') to connect sentences and ensure each paragraph has a clear, central topic sentence.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, which limits the ability to convey complex ideas effectively. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'pay full head' instead of 'pay full attention' and 'wrrong activity'. The student relies on a very narrow range of vocabulary, which is often insufficient for an academic task. To improve, the student should work on expanding their academic vocabulary and learning common collocations related to education and career development. Spelling errors are also frequent, which occasionally impedes the reader's understanding of the intended meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that often impede communication. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The student of university want'), article usage, and tense consistency. The sentence structures are predominantly simple, and attempts at more complex sentences are often faulty or grammatically incorrect. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with irregular capitalization and missing commas. To improve, the student needs to focus on the basics of English sentence construction, specifically subject-verb agreement and the correct use of tenses, before attempting more complex grammatical structures.
