IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In contemporary world, some of the university are expecting their students to acquire knowledge other subjects apart from their core subjects, while others are emphasizing their students more to focus on the main subjects. Although qualifying in the main subjects are important, I firmly believe that getting realm of additional subject facilitate students to get a good position in research and in corporate field as well.

First and foremost, institutions who influence their students to qualify the main subjects first rather than giving time on extra subjects claim that it improves the grade card of their students. Although having leisure time, students who are tenacious towards their core subjects give time to grasp the concepts efficiently, which often do not get into the brain while sitting in the classroom, because of the high pace lecture by the professors, resulting in confusions. As a result, they become erudite in those subjects and achieve better marks than students focusing on other subjects.

However, I agree with those who argue that students should acquire knowledge of other subjects also whilst studying core subjects. In modern era, companies and research organization are hiring students who are equipped with some extra knowledge rather than having better grades in their marksheets, because of the high-competitive world, which requires a multitasking person. As a result, individuals having many skills learned through extra courses during their studies will be selected for a position. For instance, an advertised research position entails characterization, theoretical modelling and simulation. In that a conventional degree holder does not have all these qualities, therefore taking extra courses are always beneficial.

In conclusion, although marks written in the marksheets matter, individuals having more number of skills make them worthwhile choice for many hiring organizations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal position. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, particularly the argument regarding the modern corporate requirement for multitasking. However, the development of the first viewpoint—that focusing solely on core subjects improves grades—is slightly less convincing and could have been supported with a more concrete example. The conclusion is a bit brief and could have better summarised the main points to reinforce the position. Overall, the task is addressed adequately, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0, though it leans towards 6.5 due to the slight lack of depth in the first body paragraph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'However', and 'As a result' are used to guide the reader through the argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing (e.g., 'In that a conventional degree holder...'). The progression of ideas is clear, and the overall structure supports the argument effectively, warranting a solid score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate and allows for the expression of ideas with reasonable precision. There are some good attempts at less common collocations, such as 'tenacious towards', 'erudite in', and 'characterization, theoretical modelling and simulation'. However, there are some awkward word choices and minor errors, such as 'getting realm of additional subject' and 'more number of skills'. These do not impede communication, but they do prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. The range is sufficient for the task, but more natural phrasing would improve the overall quality.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is an attempt to use complex forms, such as conditional and concessive clauses (e.g., 'Although qualifying... I firmly believe...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('some of the university are expecting') and article usage ('In contemporary world'). While these errors are noticeable, they rarely impede the reader's understanding of the intended meaning. To improve, the student should focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and refining the use of articles and pluralisation.
