IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some learners at the university have the desire to study other topics alongside their own, while others have the idea that they should emphasize on a single qualification and give all their efforts at that. In my opinion, they should have the opportunity to learn about the different topics regardless their main departments as it would improve their academics.

It is true that developing the only one sector that the students are learning as their majors can be considered as beneficial for the society. For exmaple, in sports, players fear the most in their opponent that is practiced by them a lot of times as those moves can be devastative for them. Similarly, if students give their full attention to one particular subject, they can become experts resulting more outputs than before. It also gives them scope to uphill their skills and become a valuable contributor to that field.

Despite the factors stated above, in my belief, students should be able to choose their topics of learning outside to their prime departments, which will give them opportunity to enrich their knowledge in differents fields. For example, if a mechanical engineer only focuses on fluid mechanis, thermodynamics and other topics only related to mechanical engineering, the individual would lag behind and miss the opportunity to improve using the enormous advancement of artificial intelligence. So, students must be aware of the changes in the world and should always have the tendency to learn new things regardless it has no connection to their main subjects. Finally, a student having a vast knowledge of a several number of fields can be a valuable asset to the economy as he or she can contribute a lot to the society.

In conclusion, I believe, students should have the option to select their learnings that are out of their primary subjects, although there can be other logical arguements that they should give their full efforts to one particular field.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The candidate addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views (studying only one's major versus learning outside subjects) and clearly presents an opinion in favor of learning diverse topics. The position is maintained throughout the response. Ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the comparison with sports players and the scenario involving a mechanical engineer exploring artificial intelligence. However, some arguments tend to over-generalize slightly, and the development could be extended further for a Band 7 or higher. Nevertheless, all prompt requirements are met comprehensively, which aligns well with a Band 6.5 to 7.0 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from an introduction to body paragraphs discussing each viewpoint, and concluding with a summary statement. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'It is true that', 'Despite the factors stated above', and 'In conclusion', though some referencing is a bit mechanical or repetitive. Paragraphing is used appropriately throughout the essay. The logical flow is generally smooth, though occasional transitions feel slightly formulaic, placing it comfortably in the Band 6.5 to 7.0 range.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The candidate demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting some less common lexical items such as 'devastative', 'prime departments', and 'valuable asset'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'emphasize on' instead of 'emphasize', 'developing the only one sector', and 'uphill their skills'. Spelling is generally accurate, but some phrasing sounds unnatural ('regardless it has no connection'). Communication is not impeded by these lexical slips, supporting a solid Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures such as conditional and relative clauses. There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text, including preposition errors ('outside to their prime departments'), missing articles ('a several number of'), and awkward phrasing ('regardless their main departments'). While these errors occur with some frequency, they rarely impede overall communication or comprehension. The control over punctuation and grammar is generally sufficient for a Band 6.0 level.
