IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 8.0)

In an increasingly competitive employment market, university students face the dilemma of whether to concentrate exclusively on their chosen field of study or to broaden their knowledge by exploring other academic disciplines. While specialising in a particular subject is essential for acquiring professional expertise, I believe that studying additional subjects is equally valuable because it fosters intellectual development and equips students with a more versatile range of skills.

On the one hand, devoting all one's time and attention to a qualification can provide substantial academic and professional advantages. University courses often involve demanding theoretical concepts, practical assignments and examinations, all of which require sustained effort. Students who focus exclusively on their principal subject are more likely to develop a profound understanding of its complexities and achieve outstanding academic results. This is particularly important in professions such as medicine, engineering and law, where a strong foundation of specialised knowledge is indispensable. For example, a medical student who spends additional time studying anatomy, pharmacology and clinical practice may acquire the expertise necessary to make accurate diagnoses and provide effective treatment. Consequently, prioritising one's main qualification can improve both academic performance and future career prospects.

On the other hand, learning about subjects beyond one's specialisation can offer considerable personal and professional benefits. Exposure to different disciplines encourages critical thinking, creativity and the ability to approach problems from multiple perspectives. Furthermore, modern workplaces increasingly value transferable skills, such as communication, digital literacy and financial awareness, which may not be covered extensively in a student's principal course. For instance, an engineering student who studies business management and public speaking may be better prepared to lead a project, manage a budget and communicate technical ideas to clients. In addition, exploring unrelated subjects can help students discover previously unrecognised interests and even identify more suitable career paths.

In my opinion, although students should devote sufficient time to mastering their chosen qualification, they should not restrict themselves entirely to one academic discipline. A balanced approach is more beneficial, provided that additional learning does not compromise their core studies. Universities can support this by offering elective courses, interdisciplinary projects and flexible learning opportunities. For example, a student pursuing an education degree could take introductory psychology or technology courses to gain a broader understanding of learning and classroom management.

In conclusion, concentrating exclusively on a qualification can lead to deeper specialist knowledge and stronger academic performance, whereas studying additional subjects promotes adaptability, creativity and a wider perspective. I therefore believe that students should prioritise their main field while making reasonable time for complementary areas of learning, as this approach prepares them more effectively for both professional challenges and lifelong intellectual growth.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt by thoroughly discussing both views—specialising exclusively versus exploring additional subjects—and presenting a well-developed, clear personal opinion throughout. In the introduction, the writer establishes a clear stance that studying additional subjects is valuable alongside professional expertise. Body paragraphs provide strong, well-supported arguments for both sides, such as the necessity of a solid foundation in medicine or engineering and the corresponding benefits of transferable skills like business management and public thinking. The conclusion neatly summarises the discussion and reinforces the initial position. Ideas are well-extended with relevant examples from general knowledge, meeting all descriptors for a high band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

Coherence and cohesion are managed exceptionally well throughout the response. Ideas are logically sequenced, beginning with a clear introduction, moving through balanced body paragraphs examining both perspectives, and concluding with a concise summary. The writer uses cohesive devices flexibly and naturally, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'Furthermore', and 'Consequently', without any mechanical feel or over-use. Paragraphing is used skillfully and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct central topic. Referencing and substitution are handled smoothly, ensuring that the progression of ideas remains transparent and easy to follow from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 8.5

The essay demonstrates a wide, fluent, and flexible range of vocabulary suited to an academic context. The writer skillfully incorporates less common lexical items and collocations with high precision, such as 'competing employment market', 'profound understanding', 'transferable skills', and 'interdisciplinary projects'. Word choice is consistently appropriate, and there are virtually no spelling or word-choice errors. The vocabulary allows the writer to convey precise shades of meaning, successfully supporting the complexity of the arguments presented regarding higher education and professional development.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The response displays a wide variety of complex sentence structures used with a high degree of flexibility and control. The majority of sentences are completely error-free, featuring sophisticated subordinate clauses, participial phrases, and conditional-like structures, such as 'While specialising in a particular subject is essential for acquiring professional expertise, I believe that...' and 'provided that additional learning does not compromise their core studies.' Punctuation is handled accurately throughout, and grammar remains remarkably polished with only rare, non-systematic slips that never impede communication. Control over grammatical forms fully matches high-level descriptors.
