Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued that undergraduates want to learn about other courses moreover to their major subjects, while others think that it is more significant to give everything their time and focus to studying for a eligibility. This essay will discuss both views and at the end it will explain why i believe student should learn other subjects besides their main subjects.
There are several advantages to learn other courses. One of the biggest benefits is that student can enhance their knowledges and different skills, through learn another subjects. For example, if a business student learn phycology and communication subject it can help to understand customers and collegues. In addition, in this modern era multinational companies often requires multiple skills. As a result employers may value individuals who can perform different types of tasks. For instance, a marketing student with knowledge of digital marketing and graphic design skills can handle the social media campaigns more effectively.
On the other hand, there are some reasons why students should give all their time and attention to their major courses and qualification. Firstly, if learners only focus on their major subjects they can learn those courses appropriately. For instance, a medical student needs to spend considerable time studying anatomy, medicine and clinical skills. However, studying too many unrelated subjects could reduce the time available for these areas.
In conclusion, although some people believe that students should devote all their time and attention to their main subject in order to obtain a qualification, others argue that learning additional subjects can provide wider knowledge and useful skills. I believe that students should study subjects beyond their main field because this can help them develop broader knowledge and prepare for different opportunities in the future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—learning additional subjects versus focusing exclusively on a main qualification—and presents a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. Ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as a business student learning psychology and a medical student focusing entirely on anatomy and clinical skills. While the reasoning is logical and covers the prompt adequately, some points tend to generalise slightly without deeper elaboration, aligning the response with a Band 7 level.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The essay is appropriately divided into four distinct paragraphs: introduction, body paragraph one (advantages of extra subjects), body paragraph two (advantages of focusing on the major), and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'In addition', and 'For instance' are used to connect ideas, though there are occasional minor mechanical transitions, such as 'at the end it will explain', which prevent it from reaching a higher band. Overall, the flow of information is easy to follow, supporting a solid Band 6.5 or 7.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'undergraduates', 'multinational companies', and 'campaigns'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'moreover to' instead of 'in addition to', 'studying for a eligibility' instead of 'a qualification', and 'knowledges' which is a non-count noun used incorrectly in the plural. Words like 'phycology' also contain spelling mistakes. Because these errors do not impede communication but show recurring inaccuracies with less common words, a Band 6.0 is appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional structures and relative clauses (e.g., 'if a business student learn phycology and communication subject it can help...'). However, there are frequent grammatical inaccuracies, particularly with verb forms and subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'advantages to learn', 'if a student learn', 'companies often requires'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and the meaning remains clear despite the errors, placing the grammatical control comfortably at a Band 6.0 level.
