IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
It is often argued that students are showing the interest in pursuing other subject areas other than following their main field of subject. Some may say that it would be a waste of time to learn other subjects and all the focus need to direct in gaining the highest educational qualification. In my point of view, students should mainly focus on their main subject because what matters is the qualification. However, in their spare time they can follow and study through other learning areas as well.
If students showing the interest in learning non- related materials apart from the main subject it would be better if they can manage time well. In case if they failed to do so they would fall into trouble and university students will loose the focus and face so many repeats in their examinations. As a result of that, they won't be able to complete the programme successfully and will happen to drag extra years in the university.
On the other hand, if undergraduates give their fullest attention to thier main subject without any distractions, it would make them easier to master in their field of study. Consequently, this leads to enhance students' skills and expertise and creating a talented workforoce to contribute to the society. This brings win-win situation for both students lives and the society as a whole.
In conclusion, i believe that learners are required to grab all the knowledge provided by the university to enhance competencies for themselves and if they can do well in their main subjects then it would be fine to follow other extra subjects as well

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on whether university students should study other subjects or focus solely on their main qualification, and presents a clear personal opinion. The position is maintained throughout the essay. However, the ideas are somewhat limited and under-developed, particularly in the body paragraphs where points about time management and workforce contribution are stated rather than fully extended with specific examples. For instance, the discussion on falling into trouble and facing exam repeats lacks depth. Therefore, this performance fits the Band 6 descriptor well, as all parts are addressed with relevant ideas, but some areas require more thorough development.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs representing different viewpoints, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'On the other hand' and 'In conclusion', though referencing and transitions can occasionally be mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'If students showing the interest...'. Logical progression is maintained throughout the text, allowing the reader to follow the writer's line of thought easily. This level of organisation and cohesive control aligns with the criteria for Band 6.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and academic phrases such as 'educational qualification', 'undergraduates', and 'workforce'. However, there are noticeable word choice errors and awkward collocations throughout the text, such as 'showing the interest' instead of 'showing an interest', 'all the focus need to direct' instead of 'needs to be directed', and 'drag extra years'. Despite these inaccuracies and occasional spelling mistakes like 'thier', communication is generally not impeded, matching the characteristics of Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing conditional structures like 'If students showing the interest...' and relative clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms, subject-verb agreement, and articles (e.g., 'main field of subject', 'students are showing', 'what matters is the qualification', and 'will happen to drag'). Punctuation is also occasionally weak, as seen in the lowercase 'i' at the beginning of the final paragraph and missing periods. Because the errors are frequent in complex structures and cause some strain for the reader, the grammar falls squarely into Band 5.
