IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Although some university students believe that they should be allowed to focus on other subjects in addition to their main subjects, others, including myself, opine that it is crucial to devote all their time and attention on studying the subjects required for their qualification.
On the one hand, learners should be given enough freedom to enroll in other subjects because it can help enhance their basic knowledge and break the monotony of their lives. More precisely, having a fixed schedule and studying the same subjects every day can make a person's life boring. The other courses can help to break the daily routine which can refresh them and bring more energy for the next day. Moreover, learning about other subjects can help boost their general knowledge which can keep them connected with the real world. For example, a business student studying psychology may better understand customers and employees.
On the other hand, focusing on topics which can help in graduation can bring a number of career opportunities. This is because gaining theoretical knowledge can assist the students in securing a job in their preferred field. If a student has enrolled in the medical field, their academic curriculum is designed accordingly to meet the of the medical profession which can help the graduates to directly enter the workforce after their graduation. Therefore, focusing particulalry on the main aspects of the course can help in achieving a successul career.
In conclusion, while learning about new topics can help in maintaing the motivation of the students to focus on their studies, I believe more importance should be given to the subjects required for graduation. Students focusing on main subjects can specifically build their career in their preferred field which can help them build a successful career.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The student has successfully addressed all parts of the task. Both views—studying additional subjects versus focusing exclusively on the main qualification—are discussed in distinct body paragraphs. The student also presents a clear personal position in the introduction and reiterates it in the conclusion. The ideas are generally well developed and supported with relevant examples, such as a business student studying psychology to better understand customers and employees. Although some of the points are slightly generalised, the overall response fully satisfies the task requirements, demonstrating a strong grasp of the prompt's argumentative demands.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are grouped logically into four well-defined paragraphs, featuring an introduction, two body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, ensuring that each central topic is cleanly separated. While referencing and substitution are occasionally repetitive, cohesion is generally well managed and supports the overall readability of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, such as 'monotony', 'theoretical knowledge', and 'workforce'. There are also successful attempts at less common lexical items, including 'opine', 'enhance', and 'curriculum'. However, there are minor lexical inaccuracies, such as the awkward phrasing 'meet the of the medical profession' in the third paragraph, and a minor spelling slip in 'particulalry'. Despite these occasional errors, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication, earning a solid Band 6.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response exhibits a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional structures ('If a student has enrolled...') and subordinate clauses ('Although some university students believe that...'). There are frequent error-free sentences, demonstrating decent control of grammar and punctuation. However, a few minor errors persist, such as the missing word in 'meet the of the medical profession' and a slight prepositional awkwardness in 'attention on studying' instead of 'attention to studying'. Overall, the grammatical control is strong and communication is never impeded.
