IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Now a days some university students desire to learn about extra subjects apart from their main subject while other group of students beleive that they should spend all of their time to their main subjects and does not bother in learning other subjects. I totally agree with this statment because if a student is giving all of his attention to some specific courses then he can betterly learn thoes courses

One important statment giving in the support of argument is that students should also learn about other things and take a part in extra co-curricular activities but if they take a part oin other activities and learning other courses then their focus on their not much as if they study only thoes subjects specificly. For Example if a student is learning four medical subjects and wish to learn some other subjects instead of medical then it would be possible that he might become careless in his own subjects and it is also possible that his all the attention to four subjects divides into five or six subjects.

On the other hand, second group of people beleives that students should learn only their specific courses related to their subjects and give all of their focus to thoes subjects. In result the student can score better and can give attention to thoes subjects betterly. For example if an engineering student is learning few engineering courses and put all of hius attentions to only specific scentences then he can score betterly and accurately in his grades while, it would also helps students in their proffesional carrier as they can remind things more accurately and perform their task perfectly.

In conclusion. Students who give all of their attention to specific subjects and provide their whole efforts to only few courses they can learn things betterly rather than dividing it into differnt parts.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses both parts of the prompt regarding students learning extra subjects versus focusing entirely on their main qualification, and a position is stated. However, the development of ideas is limited and repetitive. For instance, the argument relies heavily on simple reiterations that focusing on fewer subjects helps students score better, without introducing deeper insights or well-supported arguments. The examples provided, such as a medical or engineering student studying extra courses, are basic and somewhat tangential rather than fully fleshed out. While all parts of the task are touched upon, the reasoning tends to over-generalise and lacks the extension required for higher bands, placing this performance firmly in the Band 5 category.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into four paragraphs, reflecting an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, which provides a basic structure. However, logical progression is frequently hindered by awkward referencing and repetitive phrasing. Cohesive devices are used in a mechanical and sometimes inaccurate manner, such as 'In the result' and 'On the other hand, second group of people'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the final conclusion is incomplete, ending abruptly with 'In conclusion. Students who give...'. Referencing is not always clear, and the overall flow requires the reader to work harder to follow the writer's line of thought. These features align with the Band 5 descriptors for coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some topic-specific vocabulary related to education, such as 'university students', 'qualification', and 'medical subjects', but these are offset by frequent spelling and word-choice errors, including 'beleive' for believe, 'statment' for statement, 'betterly' for better, 'thoes' for those, and 'proffesional carrier' for professional career. Non-standard forms like 'betterly' are repeated multiple times. While the reader can grasp the general meaning, the noticeable errors and restricted vocabulary range prevent the response from achieving a higher band score, making Band 4.5 or 5 appropriate; a score of 5 reflects the basic adequacy despite recurring errors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0

The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. While there are some attempts at complex sentences using conjunctions like 'because' and 'while', these structures are frequently faulty and clumsy. Errors in tense, subject-verb agreement, and word forms are pervasive throughout the text, as seen in phrases like 'does not bother in learning', 'giving in the support', and 'his all the attention to four subjects divides'. Punctuation is also problematic, notably the fragment sentence used to start the conclusion ('In conclusion. Students who...'). Because errors are frequent and occasionally cause difficulty for the reader in parsing complex thoughts, this performance corresponds to a Band 4.0 or 4.5, with Band 4.0 capturing the frequent structural inaccuracies.
