IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Student's willingness to learn other subject in addition to their main subjects should be appreciated by the university authorities while talking necessary measures to facilitate and aid the students regarding this matter.
Although it can be helpful to study other subjects but priortizing the subjects for their respective qualification should be the main concern of the students as it is the foundation upon which they will be employed in the future. Negligence in this matter will lead to exposure regarding better oppurtunities or someone aiming for higher roles in their respective field. It couldnt be denied that learning about other things besides the main subjects would help in the better understanding but it requires proper balance which is severly lacking in majority of the university students. For instance, a doctor in his university years took intrest in learning russian spending majority of the time learning the language neglecting his main course studies and as a result he scored the lowest among his peers. Therefore, students should prioritize their main subjects that are subjected to his qualification.
Learning other subjects besides main subjects not only deepens the knowledge at an individual level but also shapes them into a better human being overall by increasing their intellectual capacity in addition to deeper understanding and thinking. It also acts as an stress reliever for many students. For instance, a cousin of mine while he was preparing for his CA exams he would study history side by side along its main subjects. When enquired he informed it helped him in getting rid if the stress or pressure buillds up during longer study sessions and helps him to score better.
In conclusion, it may look useless to someone studying other subjects along with thei main subjects but its actually helps many students to perform better therefore authorities should encourage this type of attitude.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—focusing entirely on a qualification versus learning additional subjects—and provides a clear position. The introduction outlines the writer's stance, and body paragraphs explore both sides with relevant supporting examples, such as the doctor who struggled due to language distraction and the cousin who used history to relieve exam stress. However, some ideas border on contradictions or slight confusion, such as the sentence stating that negligence leads to exposure regarding better opportunities, which slightly weakens the clarity of the argument. Overall, the ideas are sufficiently extended, meeting the criteria for Band 6.5 to 7.0. Given the logical structure and complete coverage of the prompt, a band score of 6.5 is appropriate.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay displays a generally coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure, moving logically from the introduction through the two contrasting viewpoints to a concluding statement. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Although it can be helpful', 'For instance', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader through the text. However, referencing is occasionally unclear, and some transitions feel a bit mechanical or abrupt. For instance, the transition between the first body paragraph and the second lacks a smooth connective phrase, making the shift in argument slightly jarring. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, but internal cohesion requires better control. These features align well with the descriptors for Band 6.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'intellectual capacity', 'foundation', and 'respective qualification'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'priortizing' instead of 'prioritizing', 'oppurtunities' instead of 'opportunities', 'intrest' instead of 'interest', 'severly' instead of 'severely', 'buillds' instead of 'builds', and 'thei' instead of 'their'. Additionally, phrasing such as 'leads to exposure regarding better oppurtunities' is awkward and inaccurate in collocation. Despite these slips, communication is rarely impeded, and the vocabulary is minimally sufficient to convey the intended meaning, placing this response firmly in the Band 6.0 category.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing dependent clauses and conditional structures such as 'Although it can be helpful to study other subjects but priortizing...'. However, this specific sentence contains a conjunction error by combining 'Although' with 'but'. There are several other grammatical inaccuracies, including missing articles ('a cousin of mine while he was preparing for his CA exams he would study...'), punctuation oversights, and awkward phrasing that affects the flow of complex sentences ('It couldnt be denied that learning about other things... would help in the better understanding'). While errors are frequent enough to prevent the essay from reaching a higher band, they rarely impede overall communication. This performance corresponds to a Band 5.5.
