Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Some university students think that learning other subjects in addition to their main field is useful, while others believe that it is better to concentration on their main subjects. Both viwes have their own advantage. In my opinion, students should mainly focus on their mian subject, but studying some additional subjects can also be helpful.
To begin with, there is an array of reasons to believe that student should focus on their main subjects. The most important one to be considered is better concentration and higher grades. Students can focus fully on their qualification. University education is difficult and require a lot of time. If students study too many different subjects, they do not have enough time to study their main subject. For instance, a medical student need to spend a lot of time about human body and different diseases. If this student spend too much time on other subject, their main subject may suffer. As a result, more time for their main subject can improve academic performance.
On the other hand, there are numerous other points which justify that student should learn other subjects. First of all, learnig other subject can give students more knowlegde and skills. Students can develop knowlege in different areas. For example, a student who studies computer science can also learn business and communication. Since, many companies want workers who can do many tasks, these subjects may help them in their future jobs. In addition, learning different subjects helps them understand the world better.
In conclusion, there are benefits for both viwes. Learning others subjects give students more knowlege and skills, while focus on thier mian subject can give better concentration and higher grades. In my perspective, Students should mainly focus on their major, but studying a few additional subjects can be beneficial.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—learning additional subjects versus focusing exclusively on main qualifications—and clearly states a personal position. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the medical student focusing on human anatomy or the computer science student learning business skills. However, some of the supporting ideas tend to over-generalise or remain slightly under-developed, preventing the response from reaching a higher band. For instance, the explanation of how broader knowledge helps in future jobs is somewhat brief. Overall, the prompt is fully satisfied with a clear line of argument maintained throughout, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving effectively from an introduction to body paragraphs discussing each viewpoint, and concluding with a balanced summary. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, with transition markers such as 'To begin with', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' guiding the reader through the text. However, there are minor instances where referencing or transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, ensuring the overall structure remains coherent and easy to follow. This performance is consistent with the Band 6.5 to 7.0 range, comfortably earning a 7.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common items and topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'academic performance', 'qualification', and 'communication'. However, there are notable spelling errors throughout the text, including 'concentration' written as 'concentration' in a wrong form ('better to concentration'), 'viwes', 'learnig', 'knowlegde', and 'thier'. While these errors do not impede communication, they reflect frequent slips that prevent the lexical score from reaching Band 7. The range is sufficient for precision in places, but vocabulary control remains at a Band 6 level due to recurrent spelling mistakes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional and relative clauses ('If students study too many different subjects, they do not have enough time...'). There are, however, several grammatical errors and instances of faulty agreement, such as 'student should focus' instead of 'students should', 'require a lot of time' instead of 'requires', and 'spend too much time on other subject' instead of 'subjects'. Despite these errors, they rarely impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout. Because of the frequent minor grammatical slips alongside a decent variety of structures, this response fits comfortably into the Band 6 descriptor.
