IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Some university students think that learning other subjects in addition to their main field is useful, while others believe that it is better to concentrate on their main subjects. Both views have their own advantages. In my opinion, students should mainly focus on their main subject, but studying some additional subjects can also be helpful.
To begin with, there is an array of reasons to believe that students should focus on their main subjects. The most important one to be considered is better concentration and higher grades. Students can focus fully on their qualification. University education is difficult and requires a lot of time. If students study too many different subjects, they do not have enough time to study their main subject. For instance, a medical student needs to spend a lot of time on the human body and different diseases. If this student spends too much time on other subjects, their main subject may suffer. As a result, more time for their main subjects can improve academic performance.
On the other hand, there are numerous other points which justify that students should learn other subjects. First of all, learning other subjects can give students more knowledge and skills. Students can develop knowledge in different areas. For example, a student who studies computer science can also learn business and communication. Since, many companies want workers who can do many tasks, these subjects may help them in their future jobs. In addition, learning different subjects helps them understand the world better.
In conclusion, there are benefits for both views. Learning other subjects gives students more knowledge and skills, while focusing on their main subject can give better concentration and higher grades. In my perspective, students should mainly focus on their major, but studying a few additional subjects can be beneficial.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—that students should focus solely on their main subjects versus learning additional subjects—and provides a clear, well-supported personal opinion throughout. In body paragraph two, the student presents relevant ideas regarding academic performance and concentration, supported by a clear example of a medical student. Body paragraph three extends ideas related to employability and broader knowledge, exemplified by a computer science student studying business. The position is well-developed and sustained from the introduction through to the conclusion, meeting all Band 7 requirements for Task Achievement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The response is logically organised with a clear progression from introduction to body paragraphs and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct central topic. Cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion' are employed effectively to guide the reader through the arguments, demonstrating logical sequencing. Referencing throughout the essay is generally clear and easy to follow. Although some cohesive devices are standard, the overall arrangement is coherent, fully satisfying the requirements of a Band 7 score.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow for flexibility and precision, using phrases such as 'an array of reasons', 'academic performance', and 'employability' (implied through context). Less common lexical items are attempted with some awareness of style and collocation, such as 'concentrate on their main subjects' and 'develop knowledge in different areas'. While there is some repetition of basic terms like 'subjects' and 'students', the occasional errors in word choice do not impede communication. The lexical resource displayed aligns comfortably with the Band 6.0 to 6.5 profile, leaning towards a solid 6.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditional structures and dependent clauses effectively (e.g., 'If students study too many different subjects, they do not have enough time...'). There is a good degree of control over grammar and punctuation, and the majority of sentences are grammatically sound. While minor slips occur—such as the awkward phrasing 'numerous other points which justify that students should learn'—these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. The grammatical range and accuracy consistently meet the Band 7 descriptors.
