Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, subject selection in university has become a subject of considerable debate. Some student want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects, whereas others argue that it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. This essay will discuss both perspectives before explaining why I belive that students should allow to learn other subjects in assition to their main subjects.

On the one hand, there are several reasons why people believe that university students should study additional subjects alongside their major courses. The main reason is that learning across different fields helps broaden their general knowledge and enhances problem-solving skills. This is because modern workplaces often require employees to handle multidisciplinary challenges rather than relying solely on a single area of expertise. For example, a computer science student who also studies business management or psychology can design software that meets user needs better and lead technical teams more effectively. Therefore, gaining knowledge in secondary subjects makes graduates more versatile and boosts their future career prospects.

On the other hand, others argue that it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. One major reason is that the subjects selected by the university is more likely to achive higher qualification in the specific filde. For instence, a university will select all relevent subject which should be important to learn to achive the qualification. Consequently, students will get to know about all relevent subjects based on their degree. In my view, this argument is less convincing other because subject will allow student to exparimant their knowlage.

In conclusion, both views have valid points. However, I belive that learning additional subjects is more realistic because its gives motivaion and confidance to the student.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on whether university students should study additional subjects or focus solely on their main qualifications, and the writer clearly states their position in the introduction. The ideas in the body paragraphs are relevant, with the first body paragraph presenting well-developed arguments about broadening general knowledge and problem-solving skills, supported by an example of a computer science student. However, the second body paragraph contains some underdeveloped and slightly unclear reasoning regarding university-selected subjects and achieving qualifications, coupled with typographical errors such as "achive" and "filde". Overall, the task is addressed adequately and a clear position is maintained throughout, fitting the Band 6.5 to 7.0 profile well.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay is divided into four logical paragraphs: introduction, two body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as "On the one hand", "On the other hand", and "In conclusion" are used effectively to guide the reader through the structure of the argument. Paragraphing is appropriate and overall progression is clear. However, cohesion within the final sentences of the third paragraph becomes slightly faulty and mechanical, as seen in the phrase "this argument is less convincing other because subject will allow student to exparimant their knowlage," which disrupts the logical flow and referencing. Nevertheless, the coherent overall arrangement supports a solid score.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range suitable for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as "multidisciplinary challenges", "versatile", and "career prospects". However, there are several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including "belive" instead of believe, "assition" instead of addition, "achive" instead of achieve, "filde" instead of field, "relevent" instead of relevant, "exparimant" instead of experiment, "knowlage" instead of knowledge, "motivaion" instead of motivation, and "confidance" instead of confidence. While these errors do not impede overall communication, their frequency prevents the lexical score from reaching the higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional-like structures successfully in several places, such as in the sentence "a computer science student who also studies business management or psychology can design software...". Grammatical control is generally decent, but there are notable errors including missing verbs or incorrect passive forms (e.g., "students should allow to learn other subjects" instead of "students should be allowed to learn"), subject-verb agreement issues ("Some student want"), and persistent spelling/punctuation slips. Despite these errors, communication is rarely impeded, and a sufficient variety of complex structures is attempted.
