IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some university students are keen to study additional courses as well as their major courses, while other argue that its crucial to focus on getting a degree. Although both views have some merit, I side with those who believe that focusing on your major subjects is more crucial compared with additional subjects.
On the one hand, those who believe that studing additional courses is important argue that it helps them to learn a number of things instead of their particular courses. Their central argument is that life is full of odds and we should be prepared for them in all the possible ways. For instance, a physics student should study subjects such as political science and international relation to understand the geopolitics. As a result, it helps them to be competitive in the different fields of life instead of a specific field.
On the other hand, I agree with those who argue that it is better to focus on your core courses. The most persuasive argument here is that it helps you to be an expert in your field rather than a distracted graduate. Unlike focusing on multiple courses, this approach provide more chances of success in your desired field, because learning in a fixed dimension adds a lot of value in your personality and thinking capabilities. For example, a doctor should focus on studing his medicine subjects so he can spot the diseases by symptoms rather than studing economy or busineess courses.
Therefore, i think that focusing on your fundamental course provides you more safety and value in your field..
In conclusion, while there are valid arguments for learning a number of things, I believe that focused learning is more crucial, mainly because it produce more efficient and experts in their fields.
Ultimately, to be a master of one field, ensuring that you could be well-known person in your field.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on whether university students should study additional subjects or focus purely on their major, and a clear personal position is presented in the introduction and maintained throughout the essay. Main ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the comparison between a physics student studying international relations and a medical student focusing strictly on medicine. Although some arguments could be slightly more deeply developed, the overall task response meets the requirements for a Band 6.5 to 7.0 range. The discussion flows logically from addressing both sides to reinforcing the writer's stance in the conclusion, fulfilling the core prompt requirements adequately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay is divided into a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each perspective, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the arguments, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. However, paragraphing and referencing are occasionally impacted by minor mechanical transitions and punctuation errors, such as the missing space before 'The most persuasive argument' in the third paragraph. The overall logical progression is clear, though some transitional phrasing feels somewhat formulaic. This places the performance solidly within the Band 6.0 to 6.5 range for coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'geopolitics', 'distracted graduate', and 'fundamental course'. However, there are noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies throughout the text, including 'other argue' instead of 'others argue', 'its crucial' instead of 'it is crucial', 'studing' instead of 'studying', and 'busineess' instead of 'business'. Despite these errors, the meaning is generally clear and communication is not impeded. The vocabulary resource is sufficient to achieve a Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or concessive clauses such as 'Although both views have some merit, I side with those who believe that...'. There are, however, several grammatical errors and punctuation slips present throughout the text, such as missing apostrophes or subject-verb agreement issues ('this approach provide', 'it produce more efficient and experts'). Punctuation errors also appear, including missing spaces and lowercase capitalization where uppercase is required ('Therefore, i think'). These errors occasionally distract the reader, but a fair number of error-free sentences are maintained, securing a Band 6.0.
