IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
In the modern epoch, students of few universities opine to learn about other subjects along with their main subjects whereas others postulate that it is more important to give all their time and attention studying for a qualification. I have discussed both the views and included my opinion at the end in my writing.
On one hand, giving time and attention to learn new subjects along with the main subject gives student access to knowledge in all fields rather than only one field. This helps them to open their gate for more employment opportunities than the students who study only main subjects. To exemplify, if a student of BCom with accounts as a main subject, has knowledge of minor subject such as statistics it may be helpful to get job in statistics field if he does not get a job in accounts fields.
On the other hand, giving all attention to study only main subject for qualification gives a student strong grip on that subject helping him to score a good CGPA. A good CGPA reduces the possibility of being unemployed as a good score creates a impressive image in the head of employer when applying for a job. For example, a student with BCom major accountancy has a good score, it implies that he has a good grip of knowledge in that subject. This compels the employer to keep that student as the top priority in giving job.
In my opinion, studying subjects in addition to major subject is more beneficial as it is widely known that knowledge never fades and can be helpful in any aspect of life. Students learning more subjects will have knowledge of more fields which can help them get good employment opportunities or can help them open a businesses or be self-employed.
In conclusion, both of the above mentioned views have their own pros and cons. A student should adopt any of the view considering his personal abilities and understanding.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The candidate addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on whether students should learn multiple subjects or focus solely on their qualification, and provides a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. Main ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the BCom student scenario with statistics and accountancy. However, some arguments tend to over-generalise slightly, and the introductory sentence contains a somewhat mechanical metadiscourse ('I have discussed both the views and included my opinion at the end in my writing') rather than seamlessly integrating the thesis. Overall, the task is successfully fulfilled, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, with a distinct introduction, body paragraphs addressing each perspective, a personal opinion, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On one hand', 'On the other hand', 'In my opinion', and 'In conclusion' are used to structure the text, though their application is sometimes a bit formulaic. Referencing is generally clear, and paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. This places the performance solidly at Band 7.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task and attempts some less common items such as 'epoch', 'postulate', and 'employment opportunities'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'students of few universities' instead of 'some university students' and 'open their gate' instead of 'open doors'. Repetition of phrases like 'main subjects' and 'good CGPA' limits lexical flexibility. While communication is never impeded, these slips and the limited control over sophisticated lexical items keep the score at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures ('if a student... has knowledge... it may be helpful'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present, such as 'giving all attention to study only main subject for qualification gives a student' (missing articles and incorrect prepositions) and 'an impressive image in the head of employer'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but errors in article usage and subject-verb agreement persist. Because these errors do not impede communication and a mix of complex structures is attempted, a Band 6.0 is appropriate.
