IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some university students have interest to gain knowledge about other subjects in addition to their primary field while others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification.
Firstly, studying a course with complete interest is a vital aspect of gaining perfection in it, however, it has some other benifits which include saving time for other activites intead of just studying books all day long and spend some quality time with friends and family.
Thirdly, it assists to develop skills in the profession earlier if the focus is remained in the primary subject rather than going after several other subjects and it might keep an individual distracted from what the main goal is.
Conversly, studying other subject has its own perks. For example, having knowledge of how cars pump fuel will help the person who studies arts as a primary subject and in the event of getting stuck in a wilderness while going for a long drive, that person can figure out what and why it went wrong. If it was not the case, that individual is completely dependent on a mechanic who could be miles away and might now show up if it is out of business time.
Moreover, a student might be in the wrong field and it takes some extra studies to realise that the subject and the goal of their life could be it rather than staying in the wrong place.
In conclusion, I personally believe that exploring more courses outweigh the benifits of studying just one field and it can provide the opportunity to learn more than just being a professional of one field.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses both views required by the prompt regarding whether students should study other subjects or focus solely on their main qualification, and a personal position is provided in the conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and the structure is slightly unconventional. For instance, the paragraph sequence jumps from 'Firstly' straight to 'Thirdly', omitting a 'Secondly', which disrupts the flow of supporting arguments. Furthermore, the example provided about getting stuck in a wilderness while driving and fixing a car to illustrate studying arts is somewhat tenuous and lacks strong academic justification. While all parts of the task are addressed, the arguments would benefit from greater depth and clearer extension. This performance aligns best with the Band 6 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
There is a general attempt at logical organisation, and paragraphs are used to separate different points of view. However, the cohesion of the essay suffers due to structural oddities, such as moving from 'Firstly' directly to 'Thirdly' without a 'Secondly'. Additionally, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or used inaccurately, as seen in the transition 'Conversly' (which also contains a spelling error). Paragraphing is attempted, but some paragraphs are very short and under-developed, hindering the overall progression. Referencing and logical sequencing are at times unclear, particularly in the transitions between arguments. Overall, these issues place the response firmly in the Band 6 category for Coherence and Cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'primary field', 'professional of one field', and 'quality time'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'benifits' instead of benefits, 'activites' instead of activities, 'intead' instead of instead, and 'Conversly' instead of conversely. Collocations are also occasionally awkward, such as 'gain knowledge about other subjects in addition to their primary field'. While communication is not severely impeded, these repeated lexical inaccuracies prevent the writing from achieving a higher band score, making Band 6 an appropriate evaluation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some attempt at subordination and relative clauses. There are, however, several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'Some university students have interest to gain knowledge' instead of 'have an interest in gaining', 'if the focus is remained' instead of 'remains', and 'what and why it went wrong' which lacks precision. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while these errors do not impede overall communication, their frequency means that error-free sentences are not in the majority. This warrants a Band 6 score.
