IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In universities, some students might be interested in subjects other than their majors while others may want to focus on their field relevant subjects. However, in my opinion courses other than just the qualification can help with innovation.
On the one hand, having knowledge outside the field might be interesting to some students. As it helps develop intellectual ability that helps students understand the coexistence of different sectors. For example, someone learning economics and finance in addition to engineering can understand the economics of raw materials of a powerplant and analyze the risk factor over capital expenditure in the same plant.
On the other hand, some may be more attentive towards their qualification. Because, focusing on one field can help develop expertise in that field. Most people believe, having one befitting skillset is better than having many on moderate levels. For instance, a fashion designer may be more interested in developing the design. Maybe, his concerns are only what kind of fabric is used or is it durable rather than how the fabric was made or where it came from.
From my standpoint, learning subjects in addition to the main subject can be quite advantageous. It gives you exposure to other fields that might be linked to your niche and can benefit in the long run. For example, knowing to develop a website in addition to expertise in design can help them with freelancing.
In conclusion, subjects other than majors in curriculum can develop cognitive abilities in students. While, focusing on one qualification may develop their skillset but they never understand the work environment of an industry.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on university education and providing a clear personal opinion. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, which is characteristic of this level. For instance, the discussion on focusing entirely on a qualification contains some under-developed reasoning, such as the example of the fashion designer which lacks full extension. The position is clear throughout, but the arguments could benefit from greater depth and more thorough elaboration to move to the next level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction through the body paragraphs to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each body paragraph dedicated to a distinct viewpoint or the writer's stance. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, relying on formulaic transitions such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion'. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional mechanical linking affects the natural flow between sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-related terms like 'qualification', 'intellectual ability', and 'freelancing'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, but this is sometimes accompanied by minor inaccuracies in word choice or collocation, such as 'field relevant subjects' instead of 'field-relevant subjects' or 'knowing to develop' instead of 'knowing how to develop'. These occasional lexical errors do not impede communication, and spelling remains accurate throughout.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, showcasing structures like conditional or relative clauses (e.g., 'subjects other than just the qualification can help with innovation'). There are some errors in grammar, punctuation, and article usage, such as sentence fragments ('As it helps develop...') and minor preposition slips. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication and do not obscure the meaning of the sentences, reflecting good control over basic structures alongside developing complex ones.
