Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on whether students should study additional subjects or focus solely on their main qualification, and a clear personal position is presented throughout. However, the development of ideas is uneven. For instance, the first body paragraph touches on acquiring understanding across subjects and sharing ideas with roommates, but these points remain somewhat under-developed and rely on generalities rather than deep exploration. Similarly, the second body paragraph mentions becoming an expert and winning academic debates, but the reasoning is kept at a surface level. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to extend and support all main ideas with more thorough explanations and fully realized examples rather than drifting into repetitive assertions in the conclusion.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a recognizable introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, ensuring the general flow of ideas is understandable. Paragraphing is used to separate different viewpoints, aiding the logical progression of the essay. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. Transitional phrases like 'Conversly' and 'Furthermore' are employed, but referencing and logical links between sentences can be clunky, such as the abrupt shift in the final paragraph. Additionally, pronoun referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen with 'what they entails' where the antecedent is ambiguous. To achieve a higher level, the writer should ensure smoother transitions between sentences and more precise management of cohesive devices.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate basic concepts about university education. There are attempts to use less common items and academic phrasing, such as 'area of specialty', 'multitasking', and 'residual knowledge'. However, these attempts are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word formation, such as 'higher institution learners' instead of higher education students, 'bulk ideal' instead of comprehensive idea, 'indebth' instead of in-depth, and 'becomung' instead of becoming. Spelling mistakes also occur, such as 'intially' and 'wihth'. These lexical inaccuracies reflect a limited vocabulary range that occasionally requires the reader to decode the intended meaning.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as conditional and participial clauses like 'When college learners put all their abilities in studying...'. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that persist throughout the text. These include issues with subject-verb agreement ('roomates who is studying', 'reasons been that'), missing articles ('when a debate is organize'), incorrect pluralisation ('different course'), and prepositional errors ('focusing all your time in a particular discipline'). Punctuation slips, such as comma splices ('Multitasking is a necessity to college student, it gives them...'), are also present. While communication is not severely distorted, the frequency of these grammatical errors limits the score.
