Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's world, there is a considerable debate about whether different subjects should be studied at university level or the focus should be on single selected field. Some people believe that learning other subjects along with their main subject give them a chance to strengthen their overall knowledge about different aspects of life while others argue that their time and efforts should only be reserved for a specific qualification. While both arguments have their merits, I believe that students should be given the chance to learn different subjects of their choice along with the subjects of their major.

On the one hand, learning about other subjects has been widely supported for several reasons. Firstly, it gives the students chance to enhance their knowledge about the fields which are necessary to survive in the society. For example, they should learn about their country's laws and their religious values in a separate course to be the good citizen and to move in the society which cannot be done by only learning about their specific field. Secondly, learning other subjects enhance their creativity and communication skills when they interact with the people from other majors and exchange their ideas. These skills will help them in their upcoming professional lives. Therefore, many people suggests that learning about different subjects is very beneficial approach.

On the other hand, there are those who argue that only focusing on a particular major at university level is the best approach. One of the main reason is that it encourages students to deepen their knowledge regarding their paticular field when they use all their time and attention on a particular subject. Additionally, they believe that learning other subjects shift the focus of students from their main goal and as a result they will not concentrate properly on their major.

In conclusion, while both getting knowlege regarding other subjects and focusing on a single subject at university level has their own merits, I believe that students should be given a chance to explore other subjects alongside their main field because it enhance their knowledge regarding different areas of life which I believe is essential to survive in this world.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on studying additional subjects alongside a main major and clearly presenting an overall opinion in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the arguments supporting the study of diverse subjects are reasonably well-extended, the counter-arguments regarding focusing solely on a single major are somewhat under-developed and rely on general assertions, such as the idea that learning other subjects simply shifts focus without providing deeper context. The position remains clear throughout, but deeper exploration of the counter-view would be necessary to push beyond this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression of ideas from introduction to conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each body paragraph dedicated to a distinct viewpoint. Cohesive devices are employed to connect ideas, such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand', but referencing and linking can occasionally feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, hinting at features of the next band. Overall, the information flows logically, ensuring the reader can easily follow the writer's line of reasoning throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'professional lives' and 'survive in the society'. However, there are some noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form, such as writing 'single selected field' instead of 'a single selected field', 'give them a chance' instead of 'gives', and spelling errors like 'paticular' and 'knowlege'. These minor lexical slips and occasional awkward phrasings do not impede communication, allowing the meaning to remain clear to the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as subordinate clauses with 'while' and 'because'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'learning other subjects enhance' instead of 'enhances', missing articles such as 'to be the good citizen' instead of 'a good citizen', and prepositional inaccuracies. Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, reflecting a solid control over basic structures while attempting more complex patterns.
