Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response addresses the prompt only minimally because it stops abruptly at seventy-seven words, falling well short of the two hundred and fifty-word minimum requirement. While the writer attempts to introduce both views regarding university students studying additional subjects versus focusing exclusively on their main qualification, the ideas are severely underdeveloped due to the incomplete nature of the essay. A clear position is hinted at when the writer mentions that students should approach other subjects, but this position cannot be fully established or supported because the text breaks off mid-sentence in the second paragraph. To reach a higher level, the writer must ensure the task is fully completed with well-developed ideas, adequate support, and sufficient length to cover all parts of the prompt thoroughly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The information and ideas are not arranged coherently across the text, largely because the writing is extremely brief and cuts off prematurely. There is an attempt at organization, as the writer begins with an introductory sentence and uses basic introductory markers like 'Firlsty', but the lack of completion prevents any clear overall progression or logical sequencing of arguments. Paragraphing is attempted, but the second paragraph is left unfinished. To improve in this area, the writer needs to structure the essay into distinct paragraphs that logically flow from an introduction to body paragraphs discussing both views, followed by a clear conclusion, utilizing appropriate cohesive devices to link ideas smoothly throughout the response.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with noticeable errors that strain the reader's understanding. Examples of spelling and word choice errors include 'shoul' instead of should, 'others' instead of other, 'opion' instead of opinion, 'meterials' instead of materials, 'approch' instead of approach, 'Firlsty' instead of firstly, and 'disscus' instead of discuss. These lexical inaccuracies impede communication and reflect a very limited range of vocabulary. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire, incorporate less common vocabulary with correct spelling, and ensure that word forms and collocations are used accurately in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is very limited, consisting primarily of flawed simple sentence structures with frequent errors that cause difficulty for the reader. There are significant punctuation and capitalization issues, such as missing terminal punctuation and run-on sentences like 'studies. In my opion'. Errors in verb forms, articles, and clause structures are persistent, and the incomplete sentences at the end of the text further demonstrate a lack of grammatical control. To move up to a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms with greater accuracy, ensuring correct subject-verb agreement, proper punctuation, and complete grammatical structures throughout the response.
