IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In contemporary societies It is often argued that some students are keen to learn subjects which are not part of their major, while others believe it is necessary to give all the time and effort to that specific qualification subject. I believe a balanced approach would be more beneficial for students as well as the community.

To begin with, in the recent times, students are studying more than one subject in order to gain knowledge, and better skills. To explain, lets have a look on students who belongs from underprivileged areas, trying to learn a subject or skill which provides them an opportunity to earn some money to meet their daily life expenses.

On the other hand, some students are more focused on learning only a subject which is of their interest. This trend offers students to learn a particular subject in depth, consequently, introduces researchers in the society. For example, a significant number of pharmacy students are focusing on developing research oriented skills and working in research labs for the lead optimization of molecules, to reduce the adverse side effects of medicines. This type of research supports drug discovery, which have better therapeutic effects and ensures same amount of drug delivery throughout the body.

To conclude, from my perspective I believe students should study more then one subjects if its providing them a skill set and opportunities to earn and afford their daily expenses. Similarly, students who are only focused in their subject of qualification to gain in-depth knowledge in order to formulate new therapeutics which has less adverse effects are contributing in the well-being of society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on whether students should learn multiple subjects or focus entirely on their main qualification, and it presents a clear position throughout. However, the development of ideas is uneven. While the second view regarding specialized research is supported with a detailed example about pharmacy students and drug discovery, the first view regarding learning multiple subjects is somewhat under-developed and relies on vague generalisations, such as students from underprivileged areas trying to earn money. To move to a higher level, both sides of the argument need equal extension, with fully elaborated explanations and examples rather than superficial arguments for one viewpoint.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, and the main body paragraphs are demarcated by appropriate transitional markers like 'To begin with' and 'On the other hand'. However, referencing and cohesion can be somewhat mechanical at times. For instance, the transition between sentences within the second paragraph feels slightly abrupt, and the pronoun referencing in phrases like 'which have better therapeutic effects' creates minor ambiguity regarding whether it refers to drug discovery or the drugs themselves. To improve, the writer should ensure smoother logical transitions between sentences and more precise referencing to establish a clearer progression of ideas throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'contemporary societies', 'underprivileged areas', and 'lead optimization of molecules'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'students who belongs from' instead of 'students who come from', and 'focused in' instead of 'focused on'. Spelling is generally acceptable, and these vocabulary errors do not seriously impede communication. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to demonstrate greater precision and flexibility in word choice, ensuring that collocations and word forms are used naturally and accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures. There are, however, some recurring errors in grammar and punctuation. For example, there are capitalization and punctuation slips in the opening sentence ('In contemporary societies It is often argued'), article errors ('learn a subject or skill'), and awkward phrasing like 'more then one subjects' instead of 'more than one subject'. These errors persist but rarely impede overall communication. To reach a higher standard, the writer must increase the proportion of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over articles, prepositions, and comparative structures.
