Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many people argue that the higher education students can learn other subjects in addition to their main subjects, while others have the opinion that studying for a single qualification devoting all time and attention in studying is much better. In my opinion, studying a single subject might help to attain a deep knowledge on the particular subject and score higher marks but learning extra subjects helps them to seccure a good career easily and they will be updated about the current trends.

On the one hand, paying attention to one subject at a time helps the person to concentrate more on the subject which is beneficial in attaining good marks. In addition, students acquire a wider specific knowledge on the particular subject which help him to go for further higher education. For example,a student learning chemistry as their main subject have the oppurtunity to do higher eduction in the same subject if he secure higher marks.

On the other hand, studying the main subject along with other subjects helps the student to acquire a professional degree as well as a practical profession in hand.To make it clear, students who do the dual role in taking subjects saves time to find a job.For example,a student who learn computer as his main subject can opt for another subject like AI which will help him to attain knowledge in his main subject while equipping him to secure a job after studies.

To conclude, eventhough studying a single subject have its own advantages but I strongly believe studying multiple subject at the same time can be more beneficial. However, choosing subjects wisely according to ones own choice benefits individual to select a better future.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on whether university students should focus solely on their main subject or learn additional subjects, and a clear personal position is presented in the introduction and maintained throughout. The main ideas are relevant, fulfilling the criteria for the lower band securely while showing glimpses of higher development. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed or repetitive. For instance, the argument about gaining a practical profession in hand is somewhat general and could have been extended with more precise examples rather than broad statements. Overall, the task is answered satisfactorily, hitting the core requirements with a balanced perspective.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, logical progression of ideas from the introduction through the body paragraphs to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with distinct sections for each viewpoint. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude' are employed to structure the response, though referencing is occasionally mechanical or repetitive. For example, pronouns like 'he' and 'his' are sometimes used loosely in relation to 'a student', which slightly blurs precise tracking of referents. Despite these minor lapses in cohesion, the logical flow remains easy to follow throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'attain a deep knowledge', 'professional degree', and 'current trends'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling that indicate the limits of this band. Examples include 'seccure' instead of secure, 'eduction' instead of education, and awkward collocations like 'taking subjects' instead of taking courses or studying subjects. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher level of lexical precision and control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional and relative clauses ('studying the main subject along with other subjects helps the student...', 'a student who learn computer...'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including subject-verb agreement issues ('a student who learn', 'eventhough studying a single subject have'), missing articles ('as their main subject', 'secure higher marks'), and punctuation spacing errors. These errors rarely impede communication, reflecting the typical control and occasional slips associated with a mixed simple and complex sentence profile at this level.
