Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response touches upon the prompt regarding university students learning other subjects versus focusing solely on their main qualification, and it attempts to present an opinion. However, the ideas are extremely limited and under-developed, preventing a clear and sustained discussion. Throughout the text, the arguments lack clarity and logical extension. For instance, the mention of students facing intense problems with teachers and principles, or references to Germany as a country that 'reads out mind', do not adequately address the prompt in a coherent or cohesive manner. The position of the writer is unclear, and the points made are frequently tangential or obscured by severe language limitations. To move to a higher level, the response would need to directly address both views with fully extended and supported ideas, ensuring that every point contributes to a clear, well-supported position throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
The text shows some attempts at paragraphing, but overall, information and ideas are not arranged coherently. There is a lack of clear progression throughout the response, making it very difficult for the reader to follow the train of thought. While some basic cohesive devices like 'However', 'For example', and 'in conclusion' are used, they are frequently inadequate or mechanically applied, failing to create a logical flow between sentences and paragraphs. Referencing is often unclear, such as the sudden shifts between students, teachers, and countries without proper transitional framing. To improve in this area, the writer needs to ensure that ideas are logically sequenced, that each paragraph has a clear central topic, and that cohesive devices are used accurately to establish clear relationships between sentences and paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.0
The vocabulary used throughout the essay is basic and repetitive, utilizing high-frequency words and simple terms. There are numerous noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling, such as 'studenst', 'beleive', 'hight', 'sunjects', 'engaed', 'physicall', and 'appriciate'. These lexical errors and inappropriate word choices often strain the reader and obscure the intended meaning. The range of vocabulary is strictly limited and minimally adequate at best. To achieve a higher band score, the writer must expand their lexical range by incorporating less common vocabulary, improving spelling accuracy, and demonstrating better control over word formation and collocation in academic contexts.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The grammatical structure of the essay is heavily restricted, featuring a very limited range of structures. Simple sentences predominate, and attempts at more complex structures are almost invariably faulty, resulting in frequent errors that cause severe difficulty for the reader. There are widespread issues with verb forms and tenses (e.g., 'has been important spend', 'students was growing engaed'), missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and pervasive punctuation errors, such as missing spaces after full stops. These errors frequently distort meaning and impede communication. To progress, the writer needs to practice basic sentence construction, ensure correct subject-verb agreement and verb tense usage, and build control over a mix of simple and complex sentence forms with fewer errors.
