IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In this topic a problem is given on which different persons do have different perspectives. The thing is that some of the university students think that they should also gain knowledge and study other subjects apart from there degree but some of them have their own different perspective. They think that they should only focus on their primary subjects of which there degree is. Both of the perspectives are right and do have their own complications. For the side which wanted to acquire the studies of the other subjects too they are also right as the more the knowledge the less it would be. The studies of the other subjects apart from their respected subjects, make them to get the information of the world that they aren't aware of. For Instance, a Computer Science student when introduced to Biology get to know about the basic human internal and external body which can be used for different situations. Also a person aware of all aspects of the life is a successful person in both here and afterwards. On the other hand the people who used to study only their respected subjects rather than the rest of subjects are also right. A person when been introducedto the secondary subjects instead of their primary subjects he/she may got confused and scramballed. For Instance, if a Computer Science student is introduced to Biololgy, he/she may face it challenging to understand as it's totally opposite from their respected group of studies. This create an environment of tension and fatigue which may causes in the deprovement in their respected subjects. So, the solution is that a person should get the knowledge of the other subjects but in a limit in which he/she can tolerate both primary and secondary subjects. A person sholdn't go beyond the limit.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task partially. While both views regarding studying additional subjects versus focusing solely on primary qualifications are discussed, the development of ideas is limited and repetitive. For instance, the discussion on why students might want to learn other subjects mentions gaining general knowledge and gives an example of a Computer Science student studying Biology, but the reasoning remains underdeveloped and relies on over-generalisation, such as stating it makes a person 'successful in both here and afterwards'. Similarly, the counter-perspective outlines potential confusion, but the argument lacks depth. The writer does provide a personal opinion towards the end by suggesting a balanced limit, but the overall position feels somewhat unclear and simplistic due to the lack of extended support.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation present, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. The essay is structured into a single massive body paragraph following the introduction, which makes the progression of ideas difficult to follow. Cohesive devices are used rather repetitively and mechanically, such as repeatedly relying on phrases like 'For Instance' and 'On the other hand'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, as seen in phrases like 'For the side which wanted to acquire the studies of the other subjects too they are also right'. Paragraphing is inadequate, as separating the discussion of the two opposing views into distinct paragraphs would have greatly improved the logical flow and readability of the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task. There is a noticeable reliance on basic and repetitive terms, such as repeating 'subjects' and 'respected' multiple times. Noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices occur throughout the text, including 'there degree' instead of 'their degree', 'deprovement' instead of 'deterioration' or 'drop', and 'scramballed' instead of 'confused'. Words are frequently misused in collocation, such as 'acquired the studies of the other subjects'. While the meaning can generally be understood, these inaccuracies cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the vocabulary from reaching a higher level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing demonstrates a limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple or repetitive complex forms that are often faulty. Frequent grammatical errors can cause difficulty for the reader, including problems with articles ('a Computer Science student when introduced to Biology get to know'), pluralisation ('other subject' instead of 'subjects'), and subject-verb agreement ('which causes in the deprovement'). There are also awkward syntactic patterns and prepositional errors within grammatical structures, such as 'introducedto' (spacing error) and 'a person when been introduced to'. Punctuation and sentence boundaries occasionally blur due to run-on sentences, reflecting a lack of firm control over complex grammatical patterns.
