Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some university students wish to study other subjects with a main field course, while others argue that it is significant to focus on a single subject for a qualification. This essay discusses both views before presenting a valid perspective.
On the one hand, there are several reasons why students want to learn other subjects in addition to main one. The prominent reason is that students can find their interest while study other subjects. In other words, when students learn or study new subject, they are able to know that which subject is more interesting according to their wish. For instance, schools teach 5 to 6 subjects in a class, which make students multitasker and able to find that which subject is more suitable for their future. Moreover, they can study different subjects, which cannot feel bored because when a individual only focus on single thing, which make them frustrating and mental fatigue. Thus, studying different subject at university is an ideal way to have distinct knowledge about other subjects as well.
On the other hand, focusing on one subject will be more essential for an adequate degree. The first and foremost reason is that it will give better result in the future. To explain it, when a person gives constant effect as their total time and focus to a single goal, that task may easy achievable because nowadays multitasking is too hard to manage, basically for distractions. Therefore, to be perfect in single field better than knowledge of every subjects. Secondly, it will also helpful to reduce mental stress. Generally, if a person works on different tasks, that will be difficult to balancing a daily schedule, whereas single task assists proper management with the rest as well. Hence, it leads to less stress in a day.
In conclusion, although studying on a single subject is helpful to have better result in their field and reduce mental stress; yet students can able to find new interests and get distinct variety of knowledges while studying different subjects. In my opinion, students should have a single main goal, but also get knowledge about different fields, as this boosts their multitasking approach and new interests, which makes them creative and innovative. So that, learn different things with a main goal will be advantageous.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—learning multiple subjects versus focusing strictly on a single qualification—and presenting a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. Ideas are relevant, but some are more fully developed than others, which is characteristic of this level. For instance, the arguments regarding discovering personal interests and avoiding mental fatigue are introduced but rely on repetitive explanations rather than deep extension with concrete examples. The mention of schools teaching five to six subjects is a bit tangential since the prompt focuses specifically on university students. To reach a higher level, all ideas should be fully extended with robust, relevant examples and more nuanced reasoning throughout the body paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from discussing the first view, to the opposing view, and finally to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each main body paragraph dedicated to a distinct perspective. However, cohesion at times feels mechanical or faulty. Devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'To explain it' are employed, but referencing and transitions between sentences can be repetitive and clumsy, such as the frequent use of 'when' clauses to link ideas. Additionally, some sentences lack smooth flow, which occasionally disrupts the reading experience. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to use a wider variety of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure referencing is consistently clear and natural.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, providing a sufficient range to communicate basic ideas clearly. The writer attempts some less common lexical items, such as 'multitasker', 'mental fatigue', and 'innovative', but these attempts are often accompanied by inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form. Examples include phrases like 'while study other subjects', 'constant effect' instead of effort, and 'knowledges', which is a non-count noun. Spelling and word choice errors are present, such as 'easily achievable' written as 'easy achievable', but these do not severely impede communication. To move to a higher band, the student must expand their vocabulary range, improve precision in word choice and collocations, and pay closer attention to word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as conditional and dependent clauses. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with verb forms ('students can able to find'), subject-verb agreement ('which make them frustrating'), missing articles, and awkward prepositional phrases. Punctuation errors also occur, such as inappropriate semicolon usage in the conclusion ('and reduce mental stress; yet students can able'). Although these errors are frequent enough to reflect limitations in control, they rarely impede overall communication. To reach the next level, the writer should increase the proportion of error-free sentences and demonstrate better mastery over complex grammatical structures and agreement rules.
