IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

With the introduction of internet and advance devices, students are exposed to many other topics, then they were in past. This resulted that some undergraduate and graduate students want to know more about other subjects with their main stream subjects. on the other hand some believe that it is distracting them from their main topics and must need to focus on their main stream subjects to qualify. I strongly stand with students because in this competitive world it is a crime to have a knowledge of one particular domain.

on one hand, with the growing prevalent of artificial intelligence and new technologies, the job market is very competitve for students. We see that numerous graduated students are facing an issue of unemployment because of limited knowledge of one domain. As many companies need multi-tasking employees instead of domain specific. Therefore it leads, current students a impact of learning new things over just focusing on their main streams because it is growing demand of companies making them force to focus on different sectors. For instance companies like Google and Meta are now looking forward to multi-tasking employees because normal task can be done by AI or with some other technologies.

This reasons were ignored and other part is opposing the idea with a solid evidence that students who are not good with managing multiple things at a one time, failed to have nothing in the end. Many believe that it is good to have an information of other topics but it is necessary to get a enough knowledge about their own domain. For exmaple, according to the survey done by students of MIT, USA, many pupils are distracted in different domains which tends to a problem, lack of detail knowledge of a one particular field which exacerbate the problem of unemployment.

I believe that, in this competitve world it is necessary to have a extra information but after a proper understanding of their own main subjects. They should prioritize their own field first and then they should look for additional knowledge.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both views—learning extra subjects versus focusing entirely on a qualification—and clearly states a personal position. Ideas are generally relevant, covering modern job market demands and the risk of distraction or lack of depth. However, some parts are more fully developed than others. For instance, the argument regarding the risk of losing focus is slightly repetitive and under-developed, relying on a vague reference to a survey rather than robust elaboration. To reach a higher level, all main ideas need more extension, specific reasoning, and thorough support throughout the body paragraphs, avoiding generalisations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the argument into an introduction, distinct body paragraphs representing both sides, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Nevertheless, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing is not always clear, as seen in transitions like 'This reasons were ignored and other part is opposing the idea' which feel awkward and disrupt the logical flow. Additionally, some sentences within paragraphs lack smooth integration. To improve, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure clear tracking of referents from sentence to sentence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task and attempts less common items such as 'multi-tasking', 'unemployment', and 'exacerbate'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies, inappropriate word choices, and collocation slips, such as 'main stream subjects', 'growing prevalent', 'have a knowledge', and 'extra information'. Spelling errors also appear, including 'competitve' and 'exmaple'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they restrict the score. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate greater precision in word choice, better control of word forms and collocations, and eliminate spelling mistakes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional and participial clauses. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that persist throughout the text. Issues include errors in subject-verb agreement and article use, such as 'with introduction of internet and advance devices', awkward prepositional phrasing like 'at a one time', and faulty complex structures such as 'Therefore it leads, current students a impact of learning new things'. Punctuation is also occasionally unreliable. To move up, the writer must increase control over complex sentence patterns and significantly reduce the frequency of basic grammatical errors.
