IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Some university students prefer to study subjects other than main field, while other believe that they should devote all their time and attention to their major.Although studying additional subjects can provide students with broader knowledge,i believe that maintaining a strong focus on the main subject is more important, while extra learning can still be beneficial.

On the other hand studying different subjects can help university students develop a wider range of skills and knowledge.Modern careers often required people to have abilities beyond their main qualification.for example a student studying business may benefit from learning basic computer science, communication or psychology. These additional skills can improve their ability to work with others and solve problems. Moreover studying another subjects help students discover new interests and may even provide them with alternative career opportunities in the future.

On the other hand, some people argue that university students should concentrate entirely on their main subject.A university degree usually requires a considerable amount of reading, assignments, research and practical work.If students spend too much time on a unrelated subjects, they may struggle to understand the important concepts in their major.for instance a medical students need to spend sufficient time studying anatomy and other medical subjescts because a lack of knowledge in these areas could affect their future professional performance. Therefore giving priority to the main field is particularly important for demanding degrees.

In my opinin, students should focus primarily on their major but should not completely ignore other areas of knowledge.Learning an additional subjects for a limited amount of time can make a student more flexible and well rounded without negatively affecting their main studies.for example.an english student could study basic business or digital marketing alongside their degree, which would increase their employment opportunities.

In conclusion studying other subjects can broaden studentd's knowledge and skills, whereas concentrating on the main subject help them achieve stronger academic and professional results.i believe the best approach is to give the majority of one's tiime to the main subjects while leaving some time for useful additional learning.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views—focusing entirely on the major versus learning additional subjects—and presents a clear position throughout. The main ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as a business student learning computer science or a medical student focusing on anatomy. However, there is a slight tendency to overgeneralise or touch on some points briefly, which places the response firmly at this level. For instance, the discussion on alternative career opportunities in the future is somewhat broad and could have been elaborated further. The position is well-maintained from the introduction through to the conclusion, ensuring the prompt is thoroughly tackled.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, moving logically from an introduction to body paragraphs discussing each viewpoint, and finally a personal opinion and conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'On the other hand', 'Moreover', and 'Therefore', though some transitional links feel slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as starting consecutive paragraphs with 'On the other hand'. Referencing is generally clear, but paragraph transitions could be smoother to fully achieve a higher standard. The progression of ideas makes the overall argument easy to follow despite minor mechanical cohesion issues.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'professional performance', 'digital marketing', and 'alternative career opportunities'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'opinin' instead of 'opinion', 'studentd's', 'subjescts', and the repeated use of lowercase 'i' for the pronoun 'I'. Word choice is sometimes imprecise, such as 'an unrelated subjects' instead of 'unrelated subjects'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they reflect a limitation that prevents the lexical score from rising higher.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully incorporating conditional and subordinate clauses like 'If students spend too much time on a unrelated subjects, they may struggle to understand...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing capitalisation at the beginning of sentences (e.g., 'for example', 'while other believe'), missing articles (e.g., 'other subjects'), and subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'careers often required', 'another subjects help'). Fortunately, these errors rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to grasp the meaning easily, which is characteristic of this performance level.
