Student answer (Band 6.0)

There are reasonable number of students who are interested in gaining breadth knowledge by taking courses from other majors because they want to prepare themselves for a work environment which requires flexible person who can work on variety of tasks. On the other hand, a lot students want to deepen their knowledge by taking specialized courses from a single major because they aspire to pursue careers in specialized roles. I believe that everyone at university should be allowed to take courses of their interest independent of departmental or major restrictions because it will help them explore the things they want to do in their careers.

On one side, flexibility is a key point of interest for lot of students because they want to explore and learn about a variety of topics that will help them grow in their careers. In todays modern world, job requirements a different and a lot of companies are looking for multidisciplinary people. For example, to be a manager in a company requires knowledge of management, core knowledge and as well asa good understanding of other teams working principles he/she is involved with.

On other side, a lot of people are interested in specializing one subject because they find themselves more interested in specialized roles like designers, teachers and scientists which require a deep understanding of main subject rather tahn broad knowledge of multiple ones.

I believe that majority of jobs demand to be flexible and multi oriented people because they hire employees to train in multiple departments and then assign duties according to requirements. Although we need people who are specialized in specific roles but a lot of working class needs to be flexible. That is why I think it is really important to provide learning opportunities in multiple areas so that everyone and learn and explore according to their own interest and be prepared to the society demands.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state a clear opinion: students should be able to take courses beyond their major. The discussion of breadth is supported with a relevant example about managers needing knowledge of several teams, while the specialist view is illustrated with designers, teachers and scientists. This covers the task well, and your position is consistent. However, the specialist argument is less developed than the argument for flexibility, and the examples remain quite general. To strengthen the response further, explain more specifically how studying a second subject benefits a student, and give a concrete example of a qualification or career for which focused study is essential. This would make the support more balanced and the ideas more fully extended.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: the introduction presents both views and your position, followed by paragraphs on each view and a concluding opinion. Signposting such as “On one side” and “On other side” helps readers follow the contrast. However, the progression is somewhat mechanical, and the final paragraph repeats the preference for flexibility rather than drawing the discussion together. Some links between ideas are also unclear, particularly the move from companies seeking multidisciplinary employees to the example of a manager. Use more varied transitions and make the relationship between each claim and its example explicit. A conclusion that briefly acknowledges the value of specialization while reaffirming your position would create a more balanced progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “multidisciplinary,” “specialized roles,” “qualification” and “departmental restrictions.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural word combinations, such as “breadth knowledge,” “flexible person,” “multi oriented people” and “society demands.” Some repetition of “a lot” and “knowledge” also limits precision. Aim to learn vocabulary in natural collocations and choose terms that express the intended idea exactly. For example, describe students as gaining “broad knowledge” and employees as “adaptable” or “versatile.” More precise phrasing would make the argument sound more fluent and academically appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause with “because” and a contrast introduced by “Although.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include “There are reasonable number” (missing an article), “a lot students” (missing “of”), “job requirements a different” (missing a verb), and “everyone and learn” (incorrect verb form). Agreement and sentence construction also need attention in “a lot of working class needs to be flexible.” These errors do not usually prevent the reader from understanding your point, but they reduce accuracy. Practise checking articles, verb forms and subject–verb agreement, and proofread each sentence for a complete, correctly formed clause.
