Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, some university students want to learn abouth other additional subjects. Others argued that it is more significant to gave all attention to studying for a qualification. I believe that, students should more concentrates on their major subject, but stduying other additional subject also help to gain more useful skills and knowledge.

On the one hand, studying other additional subjects gives broader knowledge to students and makes more adoptable. For example, if a computer science student learn about business subject in university may become more creative and learn that how do work in a company and also start their own business in future. Another postive aspect of this view is that, studying additional subjects helps to students to explor their interests and find better career opportunities. As a result, students become more creative and explore better career opportunities that perfectly match their interests.

On the other hand, some individuals argue that it is more crucial to shoulb be more focus on their major subject because it assists to students to gain deeper knowledge and became expert in their professional studies. For instance, a medical student need to spent more time studying medicine because becoming a doctor requires extensice specialist knowledge. Moreover, studying other addition subjects can cause of stress and distraction. As a result, students should more concentrates on their major and achieve higher grades and gain deeper knowledge.

In conclusion, although studying other additional subjects can help students to explore new career opportunities but, I believe that students should more concentrates on their major subject because this helps to students to gain deeper knowledge and gain their good grades.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and give a clear opinion: you recognise the benefits of broader study, but conclude that students should prioritise their major. The examples of a computer science student learning business and a medical student needing specialist knowledge are relevant and help explain the contrast. This meets the task well, though the two sides are not developed equally: the benefits of additional subjects are described broadly, while the medical example gives a more concrete reason for focusing on a qualification. The point about stress and distraction is also asserted rather than explained. To strengthen the response further, develop each main reason with a specific consequence or example and make the balance between the two views more even.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your position, two body paragraphs discuss opposing views, and a conclusion restates your preference. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and ideas are repeated: “explore better career opportunities” appears twice in the first body paragraph, while the conclusion repeats the point about deeper knowledge and grades. Some links within sentences are awkward, which can make relationships between ideas less clear. Use a wider range of natural transitions and pronouns, and remove repeated claims so that each sentence adds a distinct step to the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “qualification,” “career opportunities,” “specialist knowledge,” and “distraction.” There are also attempts at less common wording, such as “broader knowledge” and “professional studies.” However, errors in spelling, word form, and collocation are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause. Examples include “adoptable” where “adaptable” is intended, “explor their interests,” and “extensice specialist knowledge.” Phrases such as “other additional subjects” are also repetitive, and “gain their good grades” is not idiomatic. Build accuracy by checking spelling and learning common word partnerships, while varying repeated terms such as “subject” and “knowledge.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional phrasing in “if a computer science student learn about business…” and a subordinate clause beginning “because becoming a doctor requires…”. However, control is limited: errors occur in verb forms, agreement, infinitives, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “students should more concentrates” has an incorrect verb form, and “a medical student need to spent” combines agreement and verb-form errors. The opening also has an unnecessary comma after “I believe that.” These problems recur and can make sentences difficult to process, even though the overall meaning is usually recoverable. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and modal patterns, then proofread each sentence for a clear subject and correctly formed verb.
