IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many university students prefer to learn about other modules apart form their main subjects, while others argue that it is vital for them to spend all the time and focus to obtain degree. In this essay, both perspectives will be discussed, and I believe that universities should teach other subjects to because students can gain additional knowledge from those subjects.

On the one hand, people who supports this view believe that students should prioritize their qualification. This is mainly because learning additional subjects can become a reason for their average academic score because they have to give adequate amount of time and energy to learn those modules. Therefore, some universities prefer to have a strict curriculam where students can only learn releted subjects to their chosen course.

On the other hand, learning new subjects can be beneficial for students in many ways. Firstly, they can gain additional knowlede and information apart from their main course subjects which can create many job opportunities for the students because during their graduation they will learn new skills. Secondly, some students can have interest in other subjects, and learning those subjects can open completly new opportunities for them. For instance, students who learning civil engineering and some of them are interested in photography than learning it can create many other opportunities for them in the field of photography.

To conclude, although, learning additional subjects can be time and energy consuming for students, I believe learning additional subjects can not only add new skills in their resume whitch can create many job opportunities for them but also learning subjects they are interested in can open many new doors for them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear opinion: the introduction and conclusion support learning additional subjects, while the first body paragraph explains why some students prioritise their qualification. The points about extra skills, job opportunities and personal interests are relevant. However, the argument for focusing solely on a degree is less fully developed than the case for broader study, and the example of civil engineering students moving into photography is not explained enough to show how this benefit would work in practice. Develop each main point with a clearer explanation or a more specific example, and make the comparison between the two views more balanced.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “To conclude” make the progression easy to follow. This organisation is effective, and the main ideas are generally grouped appropriately. However, some links between claims are mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “because” to introduce explanations. The example in the second body paragraph also moves quickly from engineering to photography without fully connecting the two. Use a wider range of linking methods and add a sentence that explicitly explains how the example supports your point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary for the topic, including “qualification,” “curriculum,” “job opportunities,” and “additional knowledge.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and some topic-specific language is attempted. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “apart form,” “curriculam,” “knowlede,” “completly,” and “whitch.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “give all the time and focus” and “create many job opportunities.” These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the argument, but they reduce precision and fluency. Check spelling carefully and learn common academic collocations, such as “devote time and attention” and “broaden career prospects.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “while,” “because,” and “although,” and the overall meaning is usually clear. Some sentences are controlled, such as the opening contrast between the two groups of students. However, there are several grammatical errors: “people who supports” should use a plural verb, “students who learning” needs a finite verb, and “although” is incorrectly punctuated in the conclusion. Articles and sentence construction also need attention, as in “obtain degree” and the long final sentence, where the “not only…but also” structure is not parallel. Review subject–verb agreement, articles, and punctuation, then break long sentences into clearer units.
