IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Selecting what to learn is major concern for university peers. Students often tend to learn more subjects along with their course, however others argue that focusing on their core subjects is highly essential and should invest overall time in that. I believe that former choice is more useful for students.

People often contend that giving more time on their qualified subjects is a wise choice. This is because, university students are needed to appear for their examinations, and whole syllabus is based on their course. Students, who are consistently acquiring knowledge of their subjects by spending more time often score with flying colors in tests. If they try to learn something which is not related to their field, they most probably get distracted and can fail in their examinations.

Nevertheless, Students must be given the autonomy of studying other subjects which can widen their horizons. In other words, students who explore various disciplines would find more opportunities and can work with flexible environments. For instance, a teacher in school, who did doctorate in science but learned other subjects like english or environment, can work in many departments of school and earn high income. Moreover, the more the knowledge, the more the power a person can have. The power mainly refers to control in their field of education.

In conclusion, although it is crucial for university students to focus most of their time in learning specified subjects, I think that exploring other subjects has more benefits and increases the career opportunitiesin ones' life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state a clear preference for learning additional subjects, so the response fulfils the main parts of the task. The paragraph supporting focused study gives a relevant reason—students need to master their course syllabus—and explains the risk of distraction. The case for broader study is also relevant, with the example of a science teacher who has learned other subjects. However, that example is not fully explained: it is unclear how the additional subjects enable work in different school departments, and the claim that knowledge brings “power” is vague. To strengthen the response, develop each main point with a more precise explanation or example and make the benefits of broader study more directly relevant to university students’ future careers.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion that restates your opinion. Linking expressions such as “This is because,” “Nevertheless,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the discussion. This logical arrangement is a strength. Some connections, however, feel mechanical or do not make the reasoning fully clear. For example, “The power mainly refers to control in their field of education” does not clearly connect to the preceding point about broader knowledge. The conclusion also repeats the main position without drawing together the two arguments. Use clearer referencing and transitions between claims, and ensure each sentence develops the point immediately before it.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “core subjects,” “syllabus,” “autonomy,” “widen their horizons,” and “disciplines.” These choices show an attempt to use more specific and less common language. Some collocations and word choices are inaccurate or unnatural, though, such as “learn more subjects along with their course,” “score with flying colors,” and “work with flexible environments.” “The power” is also imprecise in this context, while “opportunitiesin” contains a spacing error and “ones’ life” is not the natural form. Aim for precise academic phrasing and check common word partnerships; this will make your ideas sound more fluent and exact.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional reasoning (“If they try to learn something…”) and a relative clause in the teacher example. Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, the opening needs an article (“a major concern”), and “others argue … and should invest” has an unclear subject and faulty parallel structure. In “Students, who are consistently acquiring knowledge … often score,” the comma incorrectly separates the defining clause, and “a teacher … who did doctorate” needs an article. There are also issues with prepositions and agreement, as in “giving more time on” and “the more the knowledge, the more the power.” Review articles, clause punctuation, and sentence parallelism while retaining your varied sentence structures.
