IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Some learners of the high level educational institution demand to learn extra subjects along with their primary subjects to explore extra fields and obtain more knowledge, which results in failure. Others argue that it is more beneficial to spend your whole time and focus on primarily subject for qualification. From my perspective, it is beneficial for the pupils to be a master in their major fields, which results in better performance.

To begin with, Some university learners want to gain the knowledge of multiple subjects. This is beacuse they think that it would be helpful for them to obtain various knowledge from the different fields, which results in failure and worse outcome of performances. For example, the MBBS student wants to learn programming language, which results in failure of both fields beacuse these are 180 degree to each other in differences. Due to bad outcomes of students, they face depression and anxiety.

Furthermore, other learners believe that it is advantageous to focus on the main subject and give your whole time to it for the graduation. If focused on single area and gave more time, it results in better preformance and obtaining graduation degree with higher marks. For instance, student focuses on Parm-D and give all his efforts on this single field and avoids extra subjects, he will probably get over 3.5 GPA. As a result, his performance will be obviously better that those who wnats to explore others as well.

In conclusion, it will cost the learner in performances who want to add other subjects to learn as well in their performances, while other to focus on single one, will results in better grades.I is good.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You present both views and give a clear preference for concentrating on a major subject, so the response addresses the basic parts of the question. However, the discussion is only partial: the benefits of studying additional subjects are not genuinely explained, and the claim that this “results in failure” is asserted rather than supported. The examples of an MBBS student learning programming and a pharmacy student pursuing a high GPA are relevant to the topic, but they mainly repeat the argument for specialisation and do not show balanced consideration of the other view. Develop the advantages of broader study—for example, transferable skills or wider career options—and explain why you still consider focused study more important. This would make your position and supporting ideas more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs signalled by “To begin with” and “Furthermore,” and a conclusion. This helps readers identify the two positions and your preference. However, progression within the paragraphs is limited, and the first body paragraph is difficult to follow because it says students seek varied knowledge but then claims this leads to failure without explaining the connection. Linking phrases such as “which results in” are repeated and sometimes make the reasoning sound mechanical. The conclusion also compresses the comparison into an unclear sentence. Use clearer topic sentences, connect each example explicitly to its point, and vary linking expressions. More precise referencing would also help readers follow who “they” and “those” refer to.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “qualification,” “primary subjects,” “multiple subjects,” “graduation degree,” and “performance.” This gives you enough language to communicate the general subject of the essay. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, sometimes making the meaning harder to understand. For example, “high level educational institution” is an awkward way to refer to a university, “obtain various knowledge” is not idiomatic, and “180 degree to each other in differences” is unclear. There are also spelling errors such as “beacuse,” “preformance,” and “wnats.” Build a more precise set of academic phrases and check spelling and collocations carefully; the suggestions below offer practical alternatives.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses with “which” and conditional structures such as “If focused on single area.” However, complex sentences are often faulty, and frequent errors in articles, agreement, verb forms, and sentence construction can make the argument difficult to follow. Examples include “This is beacuse they think,” “student focuses … and give,” and “it will cost the learner in performances.” The final phrase “I is good” is also grammatically unclear. Some sentences communicate their basic meaning, but control is not consistent enough for the reader to move through the ideas smoothly. Practise building accurate sentences with one main clause and a clearly connected supporting clause, then check subject–verb agreement, articles, and verb forms.
