IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Students have different views when it comes to studies. Some believe along with your qualification other subjects should be learnt. While others believe focus should be on your qualification. In my opinion, along with qualifcation others subjects may be considered which will help you in your prefessional career.
Focus is among the most important aspects of life, specially during your studies. It helps you to be present not just physically but also mentally. It increases chances of higher grades and professers also prefer students who remain focussed in classrooms. One thing at a time used to be key to success, stick to whatever you are doing, one day your going to do best in that. Good performance in your qualification also leads you to scholarships, which give some relief to your parents shoulders, who are bearing educational expenses. Due to some above mentioned reasons, students are more interested to pay full attentation to their qualifications.
Times now changed, the new pace of life requires multi tasking and your empoyers now expecting that you should know everything. Inflation, unemployement and population has put people to do things which even they do not like. In reality, people usually prefer high income above what they are willing to do or not. High expectations from corporations put some serious concerns over realiability to sticking to only one thing. You even dont know what are you going to do after completing your studies, hence focusing only on relevent subjects and paying full attentation your your qualification helps you to do good in your university but real life demands more than that.
Hence, in addition to your main subjects. Other subjects should also be learned. During my prefessional journey, other subjects have always help me to do better.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You present both views and state your position: you explain why students may concentrate on qualifications, then argue that learning other subjects can help in professional life. The points about grades, scholarships and changing employer expectations are relevant. However, the discussion is uneven and several claims remain general. For example, “employers now expecting that you should know everything” is not explained or supported with a specific example, and the final reference to your professional journey does not show how another subject helped. The qualification-focused view is developed more fully than the case for studying additional subjects, so the response only partly fulfils the task. Develop each side with a clear reason and a concrete example, and make your opinion more explicit throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting concentration on a qualification, a paragraph about changing work demands, and a concluding opinion. This gives the reader a basic route through the discussion. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear, and links between ideas can feel mechanical or incomplete. For instance, “Times now changed” introduces a new point, but the paragraph moves rapidly from multitasking to inflation, unemployment and income without showing how each supports the argument. The conclusion is very brief and does not draw the two views together. Use clearer topic sentences, group related reasons, and add linking explanations so each paragraph develops one central point rather than listing several loosely connected claims.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “qualification,” “scholarships,” “multi tasking,” “inflation” and “employers.” These choices help communicate the general discussion. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which makes parts of the argument less clear. Examples include “your employers now expecting,” “real life demands more,” and “reliability to sticking to only one thing.” There are also noticeable spelling errors, such as “qualifcation,” “prefessional,” “attentation” and “unemployement.” Aim for more precise academic phrasing and check spelling carefully. Using accurate expressions such as “employers expect a broader skill set” would make your ideas sound clearer and more natural.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt a mixture of simple and longer sentences, and some ideas are understandable, but control is inconsistent. Several complex sentences are faulty or incomplete, including “Some believe along with your qualification other subjects should be learnt. While others believe focus should be on your qualification,” where the second part is a fragment. There are also errors in verb forms and agreement, as in “employers now expecting,” “other subjects have always help,” and “Inflation, unemployement and population has put people.” Apostrophes and sentence boundaries also need attention: “your going” should be “you’re going,” while “In my opinion” and the following sentence need clearer punctuation. Practise complete sentence structures and check subject–verb agreement and verb forms before submitting.
