IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Yes, I agreed with this point of view that students must learn something else than there major subjects of their degree. Firstly, a student must give their enough time for the major subjects than spare some time for the extra subjects. I am a veterinary student in the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore. Apart, from my main curriculum i love to explore other fileds too for example, in part time I do participate in social welfare activities e.g. Special Animals and Veterinary Emergency Relief society doing there major activities free of cost for the poor and needy peolple of society. I am working as the Chief Coordinator in that society. And my main job in this is to supervise the head of different departments of society e.g. Medicine department doing there job for providing the healthcare of the animals in field so i have to supervise their activities either they are doing their assigned tasks or not. So i believe this will help me to prepare for the future challenges i have to face in the field and to get knowledge about the disease prevelance and there treatment too. So it is necessary to get involved all the activities other than the major subjects for the personal grooming. After this i also love to ride on a horse as rider so i read tips and tricks how to handle the horse from the books and other articles. So a person should involve in all other activities other than the major subjects of degree

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
Your position is clear: you support students learning beyond their degree subjects, and your veterinary studies and work with an animal-welfare society provide relevant personal examples. However, the task asks you to discuss both views, and the argument for concentrating entirely on a qualification is not meaningfully explained. The opening briefly says students should give their major subjects enough time, but this point is not developed into the opposing view or weighed against your opinion. Your examples also focus mainly on activities and personal development; explain more directly how these experiences complement academic study and why prioritising a qualification may matter. Addressing both sides with developed reasons would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response has a recognisable progression from your opinion to examples from your studies, society work, and horse riding. Linking phrases such as “Firstly,” “So,” and “After this” help signal movement between points. However, the ideas are presented in one long paragraph, and the sequence sometimes feels like a list of personal activities rather than a developed discussion. Several sentences are joined repeatedly with “and” or “so,” while “Apart, from” and “After this” do not create clear logical links. Separate the two viewpoints into paragraphs, then use transitions that show contrast and cause, such as “On the other hand” and “As a result.” Clearer referencing would also help readers follow who is doing each task.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “social welfare activities,” “Chief Coordinator,” “healthcare,” and “future challenges,” which helps communicate your experience. There are also attempts at more specific language, such as “disease prevalence” and “personal grooming.” However, several spelling errors and imprecise or unnatural phrases reduce accuracy, including “fileds,” “peolple,” “there treatment,” and “in part time.” Some wording is repetitive, particularly “other than the major subjects,” and “personal grooming” is not the most natural expression for personal development in this context. Aim for accurate collocations and vary repeated phrases; proofreading spelling would make your meaning more consistently clear.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to connect ideas in longer sentences, for example when describing your supervisory role and the society’s work, and you use some subordinate clauses such as “how to handle the horse.” However, the range is limited and many extended sentences are difficult to control. Errors include “I agreed” where the present opinion requires “I agree,” “a student must give their enough time,” and “I do participate,” as well as inconsistent agreement in “department doing there job.” Sentence boundaries and punctuation are also weak: the opening example runs on through several ideas, and “And my main job” begins a sentence with an unclear connection. Use shorter, complete sentences and check verb forms, articles, agreement, and clause structure.
