IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the modern era, many students prefer learning about additional subjects along with their main subjects while most prefer concentrating on main subjects only. I am neutral to this debate.

As far as I am concerned, this depends on the students capability and skill to manage his time. For many students, managing their major subjects along with the minor ones could be really challenging not to ignore the fact that most students work along with their studies too. For instance, international pupils in various countries work alongside their studies to self fund their tuition fee and other expenses. So choosing additional subjects could disrupt their work- life balance eventually leading to unnecessary academic stress. Another compelling reason for not preferring extra subjects could be the fact that most of the students find it as a distraction or it is difficult for them to concentrate on their major subjects ultimately leading to their failure in both programmes.

So most students prioritise their qualification and focus on major subjects or courses only.

In contrast to this, many multi tasking students are interested in learning about additional subjects alongside their major ones so that they might not be bored or disinterested during repetitive studying of a single subject. Individuals like this often prefer additional courses or programmes like languages, humanities, sociology, psychology and arts.

They consider it a source of relaxation of their minds after intensive studies and classes of their major subjects. Such students also prioritise their qualification but consider additional subjects as extra curriculars and are skilled in managing their time, using it wisely.

In conclusion, choice of additional subjects or prioritising qualification by concentrating on a single subject totally depends on the capability and multi-tasking of pupils. If they are capable and skilled enough to study additional subjects and concentrating on their main ones with same enthusiasm then they should go for it but if they are not interested or lack the skill of time management then they should only focus on the major subject.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a position, explaining that the choice depends on students’ ability to manage their time. The discussion of focusing on a qualification is supported with relevant points about work commitments, stress and distraction; the example of international students makes this view more concrete. You also explain why some students choose additional subjects, including variety and relaxation. However, your stated position is “neutral,” while the conclusion becomes conditional advice to students, so your own view is not fully clear. Some claims, such as students failing in both programmes, are asserted rather than explained. Make your opinion consistent from the introduction through the conclusion and develop one or two examples more specifically.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph supporting concentration on the main subject, a contrasting paragraph, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “In contrast to this” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the shift between views, and the ideas within each main paragraph are generally related. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some of the clearer progression associated with a stronger performance. However, the opening says you are neutral, while the ending gives conditional advice, which weakens the progression of your argument. Some links are also mechanical, particularly repeated uses of “So” and “Such students.” Use more precise referencing and connect each example explicitly to the point it supports.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “academic stress,” “work-life balance,” “disinterested,” and “time management.” These choices communicate the main ideas, and attempts at less common expressions show some range. At times, however, word choice and collocation are inaccurate or awkward: “self fund their tuition fee,” “a source of relaxation of their minds,” and “multi-tasking of pupils” do not sound natural in context. There are also inconsistent forms and spacing, such as “extra curriculars” and “multi tasking.” These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision. Aim for natural academic collocations and check whether each phrase expresses the intended relationship clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses beginning “while,” “so that,” and “if.” Most sentences remain understandable, and the longer sentences allow you to explain causes and conditions. Some grammatical errors persist, however. For example, “the students capability” needs a possessive form, and “most of the students find it as a distraction” has an incorrect construction. In the conclusion, “capable and skilled enough to study additional subjects and concentrating on their main ones” mixes verb forms; use parallel forms such as “to study … and concentrate.” Punctuation and spacing around commas are also inconsistent. Review possessives, verb patterns and parallel structure while retaining your varied sentence forms.
