IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Subjects selection always remains a contentious issue with divided opinions. While opponents believe that the selected qualification should given all of their attention, proponents assert that other additional courses should be made a part of curriculum to increase their knowledge regarding other fields as well. In the upcoming paragraphs, I'll give reasons that why i think that exposure to other subjects is crucial rather than sticking to the one.

In recent decade, multiple changes occured in academic ciriculum with the addition of some subjects students find irrelevant to their selected fields. However, it is incumbent on educational ministers and governments to run their education system with the global educational demands. Such additional subjects enable students to get fit in the entire global market in terms of employment purposes. For example; the addition of statistics and computer science in the course contents of medical students help them to work as medical analyst in the field of AI.

In contrast, it is highly believed that additional subjects are just a waste of time and divert student's attention from their specialisations because students think that statistics doesn't make sense in the curculim of medicine students. However, it does help them in research purposes in analytical studies in cross sectional, cohort ir case control research types. For example; in research statistics is used to analyse the population and sample size followed by the calculations of p, z and f scores.

In my perspective, additional subjects have a wide range if far reaching consequences in professional and skill development. It is a necessity of time to be aware of every field to make space in the quite challenging workplace.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You discuss both positions and make your own view clear: you argue that learning beyond a main qualification is valuable. The examples about statistics and computer science for medical students, and the use of statistics in research, are relevant and help explain your reasoning. This meets the task well, and the practical link to employment shows some development. However, the opposing view is presented mainly as a claim that extra subjects waste time and distract students; its strongest rationale, such as the need for depth or limited study time, is not explored. Your conclusion also repeats your position without drawing together the comparison. Develop both sides more evenly and explain why your examples support your judgement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting additional subjects, a contrasting paragraph, and a concluding opinion. Signposts such as “In contrast” and “In my perspective” help readers follow the overall direction. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear. The second body paragraph begins by presenting the opposing view, then shifts to defending statistics, so the contrast is not fully sustained. Some links are mechanical, and the opening sentence of the first body paragraph about recent curriculum changes does not connect smoothly to the point about employment. Use clearer topic sentences and organise each paragraph around one main claim, followed by explanation and an example.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range and attempt some less common academic expressions, including “contentious issue,” “specialisations,” “analytical studies,” and “far-reaching consequences.” These choices help establish a formal tone, and the intended meaning is generally understandable. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however, such as “get fit in the entire global market,” “course contents,” and “make space in the ... workplace.” There are also spelling errors, including “ciriculum,” “occured,” and “curculim,” which reduce precision. Aim for natural combinations such as “compete in the global job market” and “course content,” and proofread spelling. More precise vocabulary would make your argument sound clearer and more controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in “While opponents believe...” and a reason clause beginning “because students think...”. The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “the selected qualification should given” is missing “be,” and “In recent decade” needs an article or plural form. There are also problems with agreement and possessives in “additional subjects ... divert student's attention,” as well as sentence punctuation and capitalisation, such as lowercase “i” and the semicolon after “For example.” These errors do not usually prevent understanding, but they limit accuracy. Practise checking verb forms, articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries, while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
