IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, some university students wasnt to learn about other subjects along with their major is beneficial, while some thinks that it is more significant to give all the time and to concentrate studying only on qualification. Although both are relative points, i believe that student should explore other subjects while giving priority to their main academic discipline.
On the one hand studying different subjects can help students to develop a borader range of knowledge and skills. In today's competitive job market. employers often look for the candidates who posses abilities beyond their academics qualification. For instance, an engineering students who learns communication, businmess management and programming will have better opportunities than a student who have only theoretical knowledge. In addition having knowledge about more subjects can help student in discovering more career options and better opportunities.
On the ohter hand, concentrating on major subject is equally important because obtaining a recognised qualification required consiberable time and dedication. University syllabus often include complex concepts, practical assoignments and examinations. if student devide their attention in too many subject it will require more time to prepare one hard subject and then it will become hard to prepare for all at once, also become hard to achieve academic excellence in the primary fields. For instance, medical students need to dedicate sufficient time to understanding medical theories and gaining practical experience before becoming qualified professionals.
In conclusion, although focusing on main subject is essential for academic subjects, i believe that learning all subjects is also valuable. Students should maintain a balance between qalification major subject and other subject to achieve excellence.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and state a clear position: students should explore other subjects while prioritising their main discipline. The examples of engineering students gaining communication and programming skills, and medical students needing focused study, are relevant and help explain each side. This meets the task well. However, some points are asserted rather than fully developed: the claim that broader study creates “better opportunities” could be supported with a more specific explanation or example, and the risks of dividing attention are repeated without clarifying when this becomes a problem. Your conclusion also says “learning all subjects,” which is broader than the task’s idea of studying additional subjects. More precise development and a consistently qualified position would strengthen the response further.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” make the contrast easy to follow, while “For instance” introduces relevant examples. The progression is generally logical, and your opinion is stated at the beginning and reiterated at the end. Some links are mechanical, however, and the second body paragraph contains a long chain of ideas joined by commas, making the reasoning harder to track. The conclusion’s shift to “learning all subjects” also weakens the connection to your more balanced position. Use clearer sentence boundaries and more precise referencing to make the flow smoother and less repetitive.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “competitive job market,” “recognised qualification,” “dedication,” “practical experience,” and “academic excellence.” These choices help communicate the main arguments, and attempts such as “theoretical knowledge” show some ambition beyond basic vocabulary. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce accuracy, including “borader,” “posses,” “businmess,” “ohter,” and “consiberable.” Some phrases are also imprecise or unnatural, such as “all subjects” and “prepare one hard subject.” Aim to check spelling carefully and choose collocations that express your meaning precisely. This would make your vocabulary more controlled while retaining the useful range already present.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in “Although both are relative points” and a conditional structure beginning “if student divide their attention.” The overall meaning is usually clear, but errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and punctuation occur across the response. For example, “some thinks” should agree with the plural subject, and “obtaining a recognised qualification required” needs a consistent verb form. The sentence beginning “if student divide” also combines several clauses without clear punctuation, while “In today's competitive job market.” is an incomplete sentence. Work on accurate subject–verb agreement, articles, and clause boundaries, then proofread each sentence. Greater control of these patterns would make your varied structures more effective.
