IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
There has been an ongoing debate amond some university students about whether other subjects should be taught or not along with the main subject. Some students believe that they should be given the opportunity to learn other subjects in additions to their main subjects, whereas others argue that it is more important to give all their time and attention to study the main subject. The essay will discuss both perspective before presenting my own perspective.
On the one hand, proponents of learning general subjects along with majore argue that the move will increase their horizon of knowledge. This is primiraly because students often get bored from a same repeated subject and the other courses will provide them better way of keep in touch with studies. For example, the science students find them bored in science lab.Afterthat, they are given the class of music, then it will tremendously boost their energy.Similarly, sports class can give them a little escape from the biology lecture. Therefore,it is claimed that additional courses should be part of the syllabus.
On the other hand, critics of the above mentioned view contend that if students become busy in other subjects, then their interest as well as focus will be distracted. This view is supported by the fact that instead of giving time to additional subjects, learners should do more research about their own subject. This will significantly increase their information about their personal course. Moreover, their time will be saved. For instance.in place of learning musical instruments, students should do a practical in science laboratory. As a result, they believe that additional subjects should be eliminated anf considerable attention should be given to major courses.
From my perspectives, the first view seems more convincing because along with the data of a specific subjects, students should be given the advantages of general reading and learning.
In conclusion, while both views hold their meirts and demerits,I beleive that giving vast sources to learners is more beneficial and practical in the long run.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and give a clear opinion: you support learning additional subjects, stating that this offers “general reading and learning” and is more beneficial in the long run. The two main arguments are relevant: variety may refresh students, while concentrating on a qualification may allow deeper research and save time. However, some points are not fully explained. The example of science students becoming bored and then taking music or sports illustrates variety, but it does not show clearly how this broadens knowledge or benefits their future. Your opposing view would also be stronger with a specific consequence of reduced focus on the main subject. Develop each claim with a clearer explanation or example, and connect your final opinion more directly to the arguments.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for each view, your opinion, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the discussion. Within paragraphs, however, some links feel mechanical or the relationships between ideas are not fully clear. For example, “Afterthat” introduces the music example awkwardly, and “Similarly” moves to sports without explaining how this supports the broader claim. The final opinion and conclusion also repeat the same preference rather than adding a distinct synthesis. Use transitions that show the precise relationship between claims and examples, and make references such as “the move” and “the above mentioned view” more direct.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant academic vocabulary, including “proponents,” “critics,” “qualification,” “additional subjects,” and “practical,” and the meaning is generally understandable. However, the range and control are limited by repeated wording such as “subject,” “students,” and “time,” as well as several inaccurate or unnatural choices. For instance, “increase their horizon of knowledge” and “get bored from a same repeated subject” do not sound natural in this context; “boost their energy” is also imprecise. Spelling errors such as “amond,” “primiraly,” and “beleive” further reduce accuracy. Build a wider set of natural collocations for discussing breadth of study, concentration, and academic outcomes, and proofread spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including contrast clauses with “whereas,” conditional phrasing with “if,” and reason clauses with “because.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur across the response. Examples include “students often get bored from a same repeated subject,” where the article and sentence pattern are faulty, and “the science students find them bored,” where the pronoun and construction are unclear. There are also punctuation and sentence-boundary problems, such as “For instance.in place,” and missing spaces after full stops. Improve control of articles, clause construction, and punctuation, then check each sentence for a clear subject and verb. More accurate complex sentences would make your reasoning easier to follow.
