IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
While some learners preffer studying about additional subjects as well as their main subjects, others emphasize that focusing on their specific qualification would be much more benaficial. Although both sides of the argument hold their own relevance, I believe that attending one object is much more ideal for better grades.
the predominant reason of learning oher subjects in addition to the main ones is the creativity it facilitates. Students believe that it is quite valuable to have knowledge about various topics and have a general knowledge of more than one subject. It is believed that they get a significan boost while applying for jobs. Eventually, in an interview they are more likely to leave an impression, and have a highier chancee of getting that job. For example, if there are 5 candidates for a job posting and one of them is well informed on various other topics as well as the main job, hiring managers are more likely to give them a job offer.
Nevertheless, the impact of not paying attention may have on their main subject can also not be undermied. Primarily, at a single point of intrest to focus on, students can gain more insight, and can master their qualifications, which will lead them to not only having thorough knowledge on their subjects but will eventually result in getting much better grades by the end of their course. For example, I was able to land a job that my peers struggled with specifically because I paid more attention to my main subject.
In conclusion, despite the several upsides lerning other subjects may have, i firmly contend that paying full attention to their main subjects is far more compelling.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and state a clear opinion: the opening favours concentrating on the qualification, and the conclusion reinforces this position. The discussion of broader study gives a relevant reason—wider knowledge may help candidates stand out in job interviews—and the example makes that point understandable. You also explain how focusing on a main subject can deepen expertise and improve grades. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the first paragraph relies heavily on a general hiring scenario, while the second would benefit from explaining more specifically why studying extra subjects could distract from qualification work. The personal job example supports your view, but its connection to academic focus could be made clearer. More balanced explanation and fuller development would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion that restates your position. Linking expressions such as “Although,” “Nevertheless,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the argument, and the examples are placed alongside the relevant claims. Some connections are less smooth or precise, however. For instance, “the impact of not paying attention may have on their main subject” is an awkward transition into the opposing view, and “Primarily, at a single point of interest to focus on” does not clearly express the relationship between focus and mastery. The progression is generally understandable, but clearer topic sentences and more precise referencing would make cohesion less mechanical and improve the flow between claims and examples.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt a range of vocabulary relevant to education and employment, including “qualification,” “various topics,” “thorough knowledge,” and “hiring managers.” These choices allow you to communicate the main ideas, and some less common expressions show an effort to be precise. However, several spelling and word-choice errors reduce accuracy, including “preffer,” “benaficial,” “significan,” “highier,” and “undermied.” There are also unnatural collocations or expressions, such as “attending one object” and “give them a job offer,” which make parts of the argument less fluent. Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than more elaborate wording; proofreading spelling and checking collocations would make your vocabulary more effective and precise.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concessive opening with “Although” and a conditional example beginning “if there are 5 candidates.” Most of the meaning remains clear, and the response shows an attempt to connect clauses in varied ways. Some grammatical and punctuation errors remain. For example, “the predominant reason … is the creativity it facilitates” has an unclear grammatical relationship, while “which will lead them to not only having … but will eventually result” does not maintain a parallel structure. The sentence beginning “Primarily” is also difficult to follow because its clause structure is incomplete or awkward. Capitalisation of “i” and punctuation around longer sentences need attention. More controlled complex sentences and careful editing would improve accuracy.
