IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Different students have different perspectives about how to study. There are two main catagories of students, the ones who think that we should learn more outside our own subjects, and the ones who think that they should just focus on their subject course.

Some stusents study different courses irrelivent the course. They do extra work to learn multiple skills. I do not like this because in this way our own course is not completely covered and learned. We spend time on these and get disturbed from our own course. They even do not learn either of the course completely. in this way they are just distracted. At last, since they do not focus ontheir own course, their final result in their respective institutions are not so much fruitful, and in this way many students get disturbed from studying, even some students leave their study. Fo example, when i was in metric, some of my classfellows were studying the FSC class books and were admiring that we know multiple topics. But when we passed the metric, their results were not satisfactory and even they compelled to leave the school.

I am agree that only a few of a thousands get more benifitial results by studying extra courses. But I am talking about the whole.

the second types of students who only focus on their own curriculium, will at lst get good results. The reason is that the curriculium is set by the high level literate and trained people. They know what is required for students in their respective class in which they are studing. They include everything the students required. Student go through a step by step process and in this way they get their success.

However, studying our own course, if we have some free time, we should study additional subjects. As the main academic subjects are not so difficult that it take all our day. After completing it, we can study something new and get knowledge.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both views and give a clear preference for prioritising a student’s main course, while allowing that additional study can be useful in free time. The example about classmates studying higher-level books supports your concern that extra subjects may distract from core learning. However, the discussion is uneven: the benefits of studying other subjects are barely explained, and the claim that the curriculum already includes “everything the students required” is asserted rather than supported. Your opinion also shifts somewhat, since you first reject extra study and later recommend it when time permits. Explain the value of broader learning and state more precisely when you think it should be pursued; this would make the response more fully developed and consistent.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, discussion of students who take extra subjects, a paragraph supporting focus on the main course, and a concluding qualification. Some linking phrases, such as “The reason is that” and “However,” help show relationships between ideas. Nevertheless, progression is not always clear. The sentence “I am agree that only a few…” interrupts the argument without clearly connecting to the preceding example, and the final paragraph introduces a more balanced position without fully resolving the earlier opposition. Several sentences repeat the idea that students become distracted or achieve poor results. Use clearer topic sentences, connect each example directly to its claim, and make the conclusion follow logically from the two views.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant academic vocabulary, including “perspectives,” “multiple skills,” “curriculum,” and “respective institutions,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors make the writing less clear or natural. For example, “learn different courses” and “get disturbed from our own course” are awkward, while “fruitful” does not fit naturally with “final result” in this context. There are also repeated forms such as “course” and “students,” and misspellings including “catagories,” “irrelivent,” and “benifitial.” Build a more precise set of phrases for discussing academic priorities, such as “broaden their knowledge” and “devote time to their core subject,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a reason clause beginning “The reason is that…” and a conditional idea in “if we have some free time.” However, complex sentences are often faulty, and frequent errors sometimes make the reader pause. Examples include “I am agree” instead of “I agree,” “the final result … are” with incorrect subject–verb agreement, and “it take all our day” instead of “it takes all day.” Articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries also need attention: “the second types of students” should be “the second type,” and “in this way they are just distracted” should begin with a capital letter after the full stop. Practise accurate sentence patterns before adding more complexity.
