Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response makes a basic attempt to discuss both views and gives a preference for studying both main and additional subjects in the conclusion. However, the discussion does not clearly explain the value of focusing exclusively on a qualification, and several points are confusing or unsupported—for example, the claim that some students “do not learn their main books” is followed by an unclear explanation of their study habits. The essay also does not develop relevant examples or reasons sufficiently to answer the prompt fully. The response is 223 words, so it falls 27 words short of the 250-word minimum; 26 words copied from the task prompt were not counted. To improve, state your position clearly and develop each view with a specific reason and example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a visible overall structure: the first paragraph discusses students who study additional subjects, the second turns to those who focus on their qualification, and the final paragraph gives a conclusion. Basic linking expressions such as “In addition,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help signal these stages. However, progression within paragraphs is often difficult to follow. For instance, the first paragraph moves from students’ ability to learn quickly to their routine and then to playing games, without showing how these points support the argument. References such as “these books” are also unclear. Organise each paragraph around one main claim, then explain and illustrate it; use linking words to show the relationship between ideas rather than simply adding statements.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The essay uses enough basic vocabulary to communicate its general subject, including terms such as “main subjects,” “qualification,” “knowledge,” and “revise.” There are also attempts to express ideas about planning and learning, such as “divided their time in different sections.” However, vocabulary is repetitive and some word choices or collocations make meaning unclear, including “learn their main books,” “integellent mind,” and “thinking capacity of their brain.” Spelling errors such as “rountine,” “lesiure,” and “anthing” further reduce accuracy. Build a more precise range for discussing study choices, and check spelling and natural word combinations. For example, refer to studying a subject or course rather than learning a book.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response mainly uses simple sentences, with some attempts to connect clauses using “because,” “when,” and “instead of.” This allows the reader to identify the broad topic, but control of sentence structure and basic grammar is inconsistent. Examples include “their brain are very active,” “students does not have ability,” and “they not learn,” where agreement, auxiliary verbs, or sentence construction are faulty. The sentence beginning “Such as they study the book” is also an incomplete construction. These errors recur and sometimes make relationships between ideas hard to understand. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, articles, and complete sentences first, then add a few controlled complex sentences—for example, explaining why students may benefit from studying an additional subject.
