IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 4.5)
It is more important to give all their time and attention to studying qualification. If we give some time to additional subjects,
our mind will not relax. For studying anything ,we should have a fresh mind.Qualification is related to our future while those additional subjects are extra burden for our mind.If we put our concentration to those subjects, our mind feel dizziness.
Qualifaction should be our first priority as in future it will give us job, mental satisfaction etc.During our qualification,if we take part in additional subjects, our mind will divert from our main goal of life.
We should give some time to sports rather than these addional subjects. If i take example from my life during my F.S.C(pre Medical),when ever my mind was not remembered the thing i went to play sports mostly cricket. After playing cricket, my mind got fresh and i paid full attention to my studies. In this situation, if i gave this time to additional subjects,i must got tiered because we need some entertaing things in our life.
Studying additional is boring.Although we can study these subjects, but later on ,it will become boring.Mostly students who are doing some degrees, have not leisure time to study these boring subjects. They already have their favourite subjects which they choose for their future.
As i say, i was a medical student,I choosed this field because of my interest.I was interested in biology, that is why i don't perfer any subject on biology.I fully focused on my degree and qualify my degree with good grades.I read many books but related to my own subject and topic.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
Your position is clear: you favour concentrating on a qualification, and you give personal examples from your medical studies and playing cricket. However, the prompt asks you to discuss both views, and the opposing case for learning additional subjects is not meaningfully explained; instead, you mainly describe these subjects as boring or burdensome. Several claims, such as that extra study causes dizziness or prevents relaxation, are not supported or clearly explained. The response also contains 246 words, so it falls four words short of the 250-word minimum; 13 words copied from the prompt were excluded from the count. To improve, explain the benefits of studying other subjects, then develop your own view with relevant, specific reasons and examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The response has a recognisable focus on your preference for prioritising a qualification, and the personal example about playing cricket gives one section a clear central point. However, ideas are not arranged into a clear discussion of both sides: the opening repeats the preference, while later paragraphs move between claims about mental fatigue, leisure, boredom and personal subject choice without a logical progression. Linking phrases such as “Although” and “As I say” are used, but they do not consistently show how the ideas relate, and some references are unclear. Organise the essay into an introduction, a paragraph explaining the case for additional subjects, a paragraph supporting your view, and a conclusion. Use transitions to make the comparison explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use a basic range of vocabulary to communicate your main position, including “qualification,” “concentration,” “additional subjects” and “future.” Some wording is relevant to the topic, but repetition and inaccurate choices limit clarity and precision. For example, “our mind feel dizziness” does not express the intended effect naturally, and “Studying additional is boring” is unclear. There are also spelling errors such as “Qualifaction,” “addional” and “perfer,” which make the writing less controlled. Build a more precise academic vocabulary for discussing educational benefits and workload, and check spelling and collocations carefully. This would help you explain ideas rather than relying on broad claims that extra subjects are burdensome or boring.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some longer sentences, including “Although we can study these subjects, but later on, it will become boring,” and use time clauses in the personal example. However, the range remains limited, and errors in sentence structure, agreement, verb forms and articles occur frequently enough to make parts difficult to follow. Examples include “our mind feel dizziness,” “I must got tiered,” and “I choosed this field.” The sentence beginning “If we give some time…” also needs clearer grammatical construction. Practise accurate simple sentences first, then build complex sentences with one clear main clause and a correctly formed subordinate clause. Check subject–verb agreement, past-tense forms and punctuation when proofreading.
