IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some university students want to learn about other subjects in addition to their main subjects. Others believe it is more important to give all their time and attention to studying for a qualification. Discuss both these views and give your opinion. Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many students in university want to gain knowledge in other subjects as well as to their core subjects. However, others think that students should be only focused to their main subjects for a better qualification. In my opinion, student should spend their time to study other subjects in addition to their main subjects to be more skilled. This essay will describe both of the views and why I believe that it is necessary to give attention to other subjects as well.

On the one hand, some university students want to spend their time and attention learning other subjects including their main subjects. These students believe that, to qualify in the job market they need to have other skills too. There are some subjects that are interdependent. To be successful in a domain, knowledge about other domains are also necessary. For example, a software engineering student may also need to learn business courses. As they will develop new platforms or websites, they need to understand about consumer satisfaction to make the websites more worthy to the clients. Therefore, to attract clients and to sell their platforms, they need business knowledge. As a result, they can develop new websites according to the clients taste and sell it. In my opinion, learning other subjects in addition to main subjects are crucial. Therefore, they should strike a balance between the importance of giving time and attention to their main subjects and other subjects.

On the other hand, some people believe that to be successful a student needs to focus and give all their time to study their main subjects. They think that because they believe giving time to other subjects will create an immense pressure to the students and it may distract them to do well in their domain. For instance, they tend to think that if a student focuses on multiple subjects they are not going to do well in their own subjects. Therefore, the pressure of succeeding in all subjects may create a difficult situation for them. Consequently, this can lead to make them have worser result in their main subjects.

In conclusion, both of the views are debatable. However, I believe that students should learn other subjects in addition to their main subjects to be more skilled in this competitive world.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and gives a clear opinion: you support studying additional subjects, while acknowledging concerns about pressure and distraction. The software-engineering example helps explain how business knowledge could benefit students entering the job market. However, the two sides are not developed equally. The argument for broader study is illustrated in detail, whereas the opposing view is mostly asserted; explain more specifically how competing coursework could affect time, grades, or depth of expertise. The conclusion restates your position but does not add much synthesis of the discussion. To strengthen the response, develop the counterargument with a concrete example and make the reasoning behind your preferred balance more explicit. The response also includes 16 words copied from the task prompt; these are excluded from the reported word count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for each view, and a conclusion. The progression from the benefits of interdisciplinary learning to the risks of divided attention is easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the organisation clear, though their use is somewhat formulaic. Some connections within paragraphs are repetitive: the first body paragraph repeatedly explains that business knowledge helps attract clients and sell platforms, while “Therefore” and “As a result” do much of the linking work. The reference in “they tend to think” is also slightly vague. Use a wider range of natural transitions and trim repeated points to make cohesion more flexible and less mechanical.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “interdependent,” “consumer satisfaction,” “competitive,” and “immense pressure.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and meaning remains clear throughout. There are, however, several imprecise or unnatural expressions, such as “more worthy to the clients,” “qualify in the job market,” and “do well in their domain.” Some repetition of “subjects,” “students,” and “main subjects” also limits flexibility. Aim for more natural academic collocations and vary repeated terms where the meaning allows. For example, describe websites as “more valuable to users,” and refer to “entering the job market” or “performing well in their field.” This would make the vocabulary more precise without requiring unnecessarily complex wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay includes a mix of simple and complex structures, including clauses with “because,” “as,” and “if,” and most sentences communicate the intended meaning. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with agreement, articles, and verb patterns. Examples include “student should spend” (a student should spend), “knowledge about other domains are” (knowledge … is), and “learning other subjects … are crucial” (learning … is crucial). The phrase “it may distract them to do well” also uses an incorrect verb pattern; write “distract them from doing well.” “Worser result” should be “worse results.” Review subject–verb agreement and common verb patterns, then proofread for these recurring issues. More consistently accurate complex sentences would improve control.
